See it on Etsy →A mystery mosaic is a colour-by-number with the reveal held back. You get a grid, a numbered key and no reference image — so unlike a normal paint-by-numbers, you genuinely do not know what you are making. The satisfaction is in the moment it resolves.
Ours run at four to six patterns per book and between forty and a hundred puzzles, at difficulty levels from twelve colours up to thirty-six. The harder books use isometric grids rather than flat squares, which makes the image resolve later and hit harder when it does.
That is the point. If you want to know what you are painting before you start, the paint-by-numbers collection is the one you want.
Lower counts resolve fast and suit an evening. The 36-colour ultra levels can take a week and hold detail a flat grid cannot.
Print a puzzle, get it wrong, print it again. The download stays in your Etsy account.
A paint-by-numbers kit shows you the finished painting up front — you are recreating something you can see. A mystery mosaic hides it. You work square by square from the key alone, and the image only becomes readable somewhere past the halfway mark.
Fine-tip markers or coloured pencils, both work. Markers give flatter, more pixel-like squares which suits the style; pencils are more forgiving if you miscount a row. A ruler helps on the larger grids.
A 12-colour grid is an hour or two. The 36-colour ultra isometric puzzles are genuinely long — several sittings. That is a feature if you want something to come back to.
The lower colour counts, yes, if the child is comfortable with careful counting. The ultra levels are adult-patience territory. There are dedicated kids' titles in the collection.
Every file is an instant download and yours to print as many times as you like.
