The tepuis are among the oldest geological formations on Earth, remnants of the Precambrian shield that once stretched between South America and Africa, roughly two billion years old. The indigenous Pemón people knew the falls as Kerepakupai Merú, meaning "waterfall of the deepest place," long before any outsider ever saw them. In 1933, American bush pilot Jimmie Angel was flying over the Gran Sabana searching for a rumoured gold-bearing riverbed when he spotted an enormous cascade pouring off the top of Auyán-tepui. Four years later, in 1937, he crash-landed his monoplane on the muddy summit and spent 11 days walking back to civilisation with his wife and two companions. The falls have carried his name ever since.
