The park protects more than 2,000 documented natural stone arches — the highest concentration on Earth — carved out of Entrada sandstone that was laid down as coastal dunes 200 million years ago. Delicate Arch is the largest freestanding arch in the park at 16 metres tall and 10 metres wide, and it stands on a wind-scoured slickrock rim above a natural bowl the size of a small stadium. Early cattle ranchers in the 1890s called it "the Chaps" and "the Schoolmarm's Bloomers" before its far more elegant name was chosen. In 1929, President Herbert Hoover declared the area a National Monument thanks to the campaigning of Alexander Ringhoffer, a Hungarian-American prospector who wrote to the Rio Grande Railroad urging them to bring tourists to see it. It became Arches National Park in 1971. Delicate Arch appeared on Utah's state licence plate in 1993 and has been the symbol of the state ever since. The arch itself is not permanent — sandstone erodes constantly, and every arch in the park is either being widened or slowly collapsing. Landscape Arch, on the Devils Garden Trail, lost a 22-metre slab in 1991. Wall Arch collapsed completely in 2008. Delicate Arch stands for now — but it stands on a countdown.
