It is the most photographed slot canyon in the world — and one of the most extraordinary natural sculptures on Earth. The canyon was carved over millions of years by flash floods pouring through cracks in the ancient Navajo Sandstone — a soft red-orange sedimentary rock formed from windblown dunes during the Jurassic period, roughly 190 million years ago. Every summer monsoon storm, water rushes through the canyon at speeds of over 30 metres per second, gradually smoothing and sculpting the walls into the flowing curves and waves you see today. The stone changes colour throughout the day depending on the angle of the sun — from warm coral and gold in the early morning, through magenta and orange at midday, to deep rust and purple in the late afternoon. Antelope Canyon has two main sections: Upper Antelope Canyon, known in Navajo as Tsé bighánílíní ("the place where water runs through rocks"), and Lower Antelope Canyon, known as Hazdistazí ("spiral rock arches"). Both are located entirely within Navajo Nation land and can only be visited on guided tours led by Navajo guides. In 1997, a devastating flash flood in Lower Antelope Canyon killed 11 tourists — a tragedy that led to today's strict guided-only tour system, which has kept every visitor safe since. The Navajo people (Diné) consider the canyon a sacred place — a space for prayer, quiet reflection and connection with the natural world. Visitors are asked to enter respectfully, keep their voices low, and treat the space the way they would treat any other place of worship.
