π¨π¦ Paint the wild heart of the Ozarks - a bull elk on Boxley Valley beside the Buffalo National River
A massive bull elk with impressive antlers grazing on a warm meadow. The clear emerald Buffalo River winding through the wide grassy valley. Warm cream limestone bluffs rising in the distance. Dense oak and hickory ablaze in crimson, mustard yellow and warm orange autumn colour. A small herd of cow elk in the middle distance. Deep blue Arkansas sky above. Boxley Valley in autumn is the wild heart of the Natural State β the postcard shot of Arkansas, and the last valley in the Ozarks where wild elk still roam. And it is your painting.
Cut the engine on the truck. Watch the bull step into the clearing. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Buffalo National River flows for 217 kilometres through the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas β one of the last major undammed rivers in the lower 48 United States. On March 1, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the legislation that made it America's very first National River β a category of protected land created specifically to keep the Buffalo flowing wild and free forever, in the exact form it had followed for millennia. The river carves through some of the most spectacular Ozark scenery in the country, past 168-metre limestone bluffs like Big Bluff (the tallest between the Rockies and the Appalachians), Roark Bluff, and the emerald plunge pool at the base of Hemmed-In Hollow Falls β the tallest waterfall between those two mountain ranges. Boxley Valley β the wide grassy meadow of the upper Buffalo β was homesteaded by settlers in the early 1800s, and the National Park Service still preserves several original 19th-century homesteads and the beautiful pale-blue Boxley Valley Church built in 1893. But Boxley's real fame today is the wild elk. Elk were native to Arkansas for thousands of years before European settlement, and were completely hunted out by the 1840s. In 1981, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission began releasing 112 Rocky Mountain elk from Colorado and Nebraska into Boxley Valley β an experimental reintroduction that has succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. Today the herd numbers over 500 wild elk, and every autumn thousands of visitors come to Boxley Valley during the rut (October) to hear the bulls bugle across the meadows β a haunting, primeval sound that had not been heard in Arkansas for 140 years before the reintroduction. The Buffalo National River was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2019 and receives about 1.5 million visitors a year. Standing on the shoulder of the Boxley Valley road at sunrise in October, listening to a bull elk bugle across a valley his ancestors had been absent from for over a century, is one of the deepest, quietest, most hopeful sounds you can hear in the American South.
