π¨ποΈ Paint the sacred sandstone sisters and the cobalt-blue eucalyptus valley β Three Sisters at Katoomba
The extraordinary three iconic warm ochre-gold and warm chestnut-brown sandstone rock pillar formations β Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo β rising dramatically 900-925 metres above the Jamison Valley floor against a bright cobalt sky with dramatic white cumulus clouds. Brilliant warm ochre-gold and warm chestnut-brown Three Sisters sandstone pillars catching brilliant afternoon light in exquisite detail with beautiful visible ancient sandstone texture. Warm cream and warm charcoal caves and dramatic warm charcoal vertical crevasses on the sandstone faces catching brilliant afternoon shadows. Dense green Blue Mountains eucalyptus forest cascading dramatically down the entire Jamison Valley below the pillars catching brilliant afternoon warmth. Warm cobalt-blue haze of eucalyptus oil in the air creating the distinctive Blue Mountains blue tint. Warm ochre and warm chestnut Blue Mountains sandstone cliff face on the right of the composition catching brilliant afternoon light. Warm silhouette of the iconic warm cream and warm gold Scenic World Skyway cable car crossing the valley between the two cliff tops catching brilliant afternoon warmth. Warm silhouette of Echo Point elevated viewing platform in the immediate foreground with warm silhouettes of dozens of tourists in warm coral, crimson and cream jackets taking selfies with the Three Sisters behind them. Warm silhouettes of a pair of Blue Mountains sulphur-crested cockatoos flying dramatically above the valley catching brilliant afternoon light. Distant warm chestnut Blue Mountains ridges rising in soft silhouette on the horizon fading into blue haze. Brilliant white cumulus cloud formations catching brilliant midday sun creating dramatic sky drama. The Three Sisters at Katoomba is Australia itself β the sacred sandstone icon of the Blue Mountains, and the beating heart of the UNESCO Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. And it is your painting.
Ride the Skyway across the valley at noon. Watch the three sisters catch the sun above the blue haze. Let the brush find the ochre. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Blue Mountains sit approximately 90 kilometres west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and form the eastern edge of the Great Dividing Range β the mountain system that runs continuously along the entire eastern coast of Australia for over 3,500 kilometres from northern Queensland south into central Victoria. The Blue Mountains region is one of the most extraordinary and most protected wilderness landscapes anywhere in Australia, and one of the most beloved landscape destinations in the entire Sydney metropolitan region. The Blue Mountains derive their distinctive name from an extraordinary optical phenomenon that is uniquely characteristic of the Australian eucalyptus forest ecosystem. The vast Blue Mountains region is dominated by dense eucalyptus forest β over 100 different native Australian eucalyptus species growing across the mountain sandstone plateaus and valleys. Eucalyptus trees continuously release small quantities of volatile eucalyptus oil vapour into the atmosphere from their leaves β particularly during warm sunny weather. When the eucalyptus oil vapour interacts with sunlight and dust particles in the air, the resulting atmospheric scattering produces the distinctive warm cobalt-blue tinted haze that gives the entire mountain range its extraordinary blue colour appearance from a distance. This is the only mountain range on Earth named for the distinctive optical effects of native eucalyptus tree exhalations β a beautifully Australian natural phenomenon. The most iconic single landscape feature in the entire Blue Mountains region is the Three Sisters β the extraordinary series of three warm ochre-gold sandstone rock pillar formations rising 900-925 metres above the massive Jamison Valley near the town of Katoomba. The three individual pillars each have their own traditional names: Meehni (922 metres), Wimlah (918 metres), and Gunnedoo (906 metres). The pillars were formed over the past 250 million years through gradual erosion of the surrounding Sydney Basin sandstone by wind, rain, and river action β a slow geological process that has left the three pillars standing separately from the surrounding cliff face while the softer sandstone that once connected them has eroded away. According to traditional Gundungurra Aboriginal oral tradition, the three sandstone pillars are the transformed forms of three sacred sisters β Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo β who were transformed into stone by their tribal medicine man father to protect them from three brothers of a rival tribe. Traditional Aboriginal oral tradition treats the Three Sisters as one of the sacred landscape features of Gundungurra Country. The best viewing point for the Three Sisters is Echo Point at Katoomba β an elevated viewing platform that receives over 3 million international visitors per year. The Scenic World amusement complex adjacent to Echo Point operates several extraordinary tourist attractions including the Scenic Skyway (a warm cream and warm gold cable car that traverses the Jamison Valley 270 metres above the valley floor between two cliff-top stations), the Scenic Railway (the world's steepest passenger railway at a 52-degree gradient), and the Scenic Cableway (a large cable car descending 545 metres into the Jamison Valley rainforest below). The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The 1,032,649-hectare protected area contains extraordinary biodiversity including over 100 native Australian eucalyptus species (approximately 13 percent of all eucalyptus species on Earth), over 400 native Australian animal species including significant populations of endangered Wollemi pine trees (a species discovered in a remote Blue Mountains canyon in 1994 that was previously known only from 200-million-year-old fossils), and one of the largest tracts of protected eucalyptus wilderness anywhere in Australia. Standing quietly at the Echo Point viewing platform at 12:30 PM on a warm November afternoon, watching brilliant Australian sunshine catch three 250-million-year-old sacred sandstone sisters while the entire cobalt-blue eucalyptus haze of the Jamison Valley stretches below you toward the distant western horizon of the Great Dividing Range, is one of the most transcendent and quietly sacred wilderness experiences anywhere on the entire Australian continent.
