The southern cassowary in the Daintree is Queensland itself β the living dinosaur of the oldest rainforest on Earth, and one of the most extraordinary birds anywhere on the planet. And it is your painting.
Walk quietly along the rainforest boardwalk. Freeze when you see the cobalt neck. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Daintree Rainforest is a tropical rainforest ecosystem in far north Queensland, Australia, approximately 100 kilometres north of Cairns and 2,000 kilometres north of Brisbane along the tropical Coral Sea coastline. The Daintree is one of the most extraordinary tropical rainforest ecosystems anywhere on Earth β and by any reasonable measure, the single most ancient continuously-existing tropical rainforest anywhere on the planet. Modern paleobotanical research has documented that the Daintree Rainforest ecosystem has existed in essentially its current form for approximately 180 million years β meaning that the extraordinary tropical rainforest visitors walk through today is essentially the same tropical rainforest that existed across most of the ancient super-continent Gondwana during the mid-Jurassic period, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. This makes the Daintree Rainforest approximately 10 times older than the Amazon Rainforest (approximately 15 million years old) and approximately 55 million years older than the Congo Rainforest ecosystems. The extraordinary biological continuity of the Daintree ecosystem is a direct result of Australia's unusual geological history: unlike most continental landmasses, the Australian continent has moved slowly northward through relatively stable tropical latitudes since separating from Antarctica approximately 45 million years ago, avoiding the massive climate shifts that have repeatedly transformed the tropical rainforest ecosystems of Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. The Daintree contains extraordinary biological diversity: approximately 400 documented plant species that are found nowhere else on Earth, over 12,000 documented insect species, over 430 documented bird species, over 90 documented amphibian and reptile species (including the extraordinary Boyd's forest dragon and the massive amethystine python), and over 60 documented mammal species (including the extraordinary Daintree River ringtail possum, the musky rat-kangaroo, and the elusive tree kangaroo). But the most iconic wildlife species of the Daintree Rainforest β and one of the most extraordinary bird species anywhere on Earth β is the massive southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius). Cassowaries are large flightless birds native to the tropical rainforests of northern Australia and New Guinea. Adult female southern cassowaries can measure up to 2.0 metres tall and weigh up to 76 kilograms β making them the third-heaviest living bird species on Earth (only the ostrich and the emu are larger). Their extraordinary anatomy represents essentially unmodified biological features from the Cretaceous period: cassowaries are considered by paleontologists to be one of the very few surviving bird lineages whose external anatomy still closely resembles the extinct flightless theropod dinosaurs from which all modern birds evolved approximately 150 million years ago. The distinctive warm chestnut-brown horn-like casque crest on the cassowary's head is composed of a spongy foam-like keratin structure β a biological structure found nowhere else in the modern bird world β that functions to help the cassowary push through dense tropical rainforest undergrowth without injury and to amplify low-frequency vocalizations for communication with distant cassowaries through the dense rainforest canopy. The extraordinarily vivid warm cobalt-blue and warm coral-red neck skin of the adult male cassowary is one of the most striking colour displays anywhere in the mammalian and bird world β evolved specifically for female mate attraction during the annual autumn breeding season. Cassowaries play an absolutely essential ecological role as the primary seed-dispersal agent for approximately 150 individual tropical rainforest plant species in the Daintree β many of which produce fruits and seeds too large for any other Daintree animal species to disperse. Without the southern cassowary, the entire structure of the Daintree Rainforest ecosystem would fundamentally collapse within decades. The species is currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with total wild population estimates of approximately 4,000-4,600 remaining wild individuals across all of Queensland. The Wet Tropics of Queensland (which includes the Daintree Rainforest) were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 β recognising the extraordinary and irreplaceable biological, ecological, and evolutionary significance of this ancient tropical rainforest ecosystem. Standing quietly on a Daintree Rainforest boardwalk at 4:30 PM on a warm April afternoon, watching a wild southern cassowary emerge silently from the ancient tropical rainforest shadows with brilliant warm cobalt-blue and warm coral-red neck catching warm gold god-rays penetrating a 180-million-year-old rainforest canopy above, is one of the most spiritually powerful and quietly transcendent wildlife experiences anywhere on Earth.
