β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Kata Tjuta β literally "many heads" in the traditional Anangu Pitjantjatjara Aboriginal language β is an extraordinary sacred sandstone rock formation in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory of central Australia. Kata Tjuta sits approximately 25 kilometres west of the iconic Uluru (Ayers Rock), and together the two extraordinary sandstone landscape features form one of the most sacred landscape complexes anywhere in traditional Aboriginal Australian religious tradition β and one of the most-visited natural wonder destinations anywhere in the entire Southern Hemisphere. Kata Tjuta consists of 36 massive individual dome-shaped conglomerate rock formations spread across an area of approximately 21 square kilometres in the Australian Red Centre desert. The tallest of the 36 domes is Mount Olga (locally known as "Ur" in Anangu tradition), which rises 546 metres above the surrounding desert plain β approximately 200 metres taller than the nearby Uluru monolith. The extraordinary distinctive dome shapes of the Kata Tjuta formations were sculpted over the past 500-600 million years by extraordinarily slow geological erosion of the Amadeus Basin sedimentary rock layers by wind and infrequent rain water action. The rock structure itself consists of conglomerate rock (called "Mount Currie Conglomerate") composed of large embedded boulders, cobbles, and gravel cemented together within a fine-grained warm ochre-red iron-oxide-rich sandstone matrix. The distinctive warm crimson-red and warm ochre-red colouring of the domes comes directly from the high iron oxide content of the matrix rock β the same iron oxide chemical that gives Uluru its extraordinary distinctive warm ochre colour. Kata Tjuta has been continuously sacred to the Anangu Aboriginal people for over 30,000 years β one of the longest continuously observed religious traditions anywhere in the world. In traditional Anangu religious tradition, Kata Tjuta forms part of the extraordinary Tjukurpa (the sacred creation-time law that governs traditional Anangu life). Traditional Anangu religious tradition treats Kata Tjuta as one of the sacred landscape features associated with the ancient Wanambi rainbow serpent and with the sacred snake-woman Yuendumu creation stories. Portions of the Kata Tjuta site are reserved exclusively for traditional Anangu senior men's religious ceremonies and are entirely closed to non-initiated visitors as sacred private religious ground. The most extraordinary hiking experience at Kata Tjuta is the Valley of the Winds β a 7.4-kilometre one-day circuit hike that winds dramatically between the massive rock domes through deep sacred valleys and past ancient rock art sites (accessible portions only). The Valley of the Winds hike is widely considered one of the finest desert wilderness hikes anywhere in Australia β providing extraordinary views of the massive domes rising 300-500 metres directly above the hiker on both sides of the ancient sacred trail. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 for its outstanding natural values, and was re-designated in 1994 to also recognise its outstanding cultural values β becoming one of only a small number of World Heritage sites globally with the extraordinary "dual World Heritage" designation. In 1985, the entire Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park landscape was formally returned to Anangu traditional ownership through the extraordinary Uluru handback ceremony β one of the most important moments in the history of Australian Aboriginal land rights. The park is now co-managed jointly by the Anangu traditional owners and Parks Australia β an ongoing partnership model that has become internationally influential as one of the pioneering examples of indigenous-led natural heritage management. The extraordinary Central Australian summer monsoon season (typically December-February) occasionally produces dramatic thunderstorms that build up spectacular warm coral, warm magenta, and deep indigo storm clouds across the Red Centre desert horizon β providing some of the most photographed dramatic landscape imagery anywhere in Australia. When brilliant warm silver lightning strikes dramatically against the burning coral storm sky above the sacred red domes, the resulting dramatic landscape scene is one of the most spectacular natural spectacles anywhere on the entire Australian continent. Standing quietly at the sacred Valley of the Winds viewing platform at 4:15 PM on a warm January afternoon watching a dramatic Central Australian summer monsoon storm build up behind Kata Tjuta with brilliant warm silver lightning striking dramatically over the Red Centre while a warm coral rainbow arches from Kata Tjuta across to the distant silhouette of sacred Uluru 25 kilometres away, is one of the most spiritually powerful and quietly transcendent natural landscape experiences anywhere on Earth.
