β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Twelve Apostles are a spectacular series of massive warm ochre-gold and warm cream limestone sea stacks rising dramatically from the crashing Southern Ocean waves along the extraordinary coastline of Port Campbell National Park in Victoria, Australia, approximately 220 kilometres southwest of Melbourne along the internationally-famous Great Ocean Road. The Twelve Apostles are one of the most extraordinary geological features anywhere on the Australian continent, and one of the single most-photographed coastal landscape features anywhere in the entire Southern Hemisphere. The extraordinary sea stacks are located directly along the Great Ocean Road β the internationally-famous 243-kilometre coastal touring road that winds spectacularly along Victoria's southwestern coastline between the towns of Torquay and Allansford. The Great Ocean Road itself was constructed between 1919 and 1932 by returning Australian and New Zealand World War I soldiers as a memorial infrastructure project honouring Australian soldiers who died in the Great War (1914-1918). The road is now formally recognised as the world's largest war memorial monument β an extraordinary living memorial that has become one of Australia's most beloved and most-driven scenic tourist routes. The extraordinary Twelve Apostles limestone sea stacks were sculpted over the past 20 million years through relentless erosion of the Port Campbell Limestone geological formation by the powerful Southern Ocean waves and salt spray. Approximately 10-20 million years ago, the entire Twelve Apostles coastline was a massive continuous vertical limestone cliff face that extended continuously along this stretch of coast. Over millions of years, powerful Southern Ocean waves gradually eroded soft caves into the base of the vertical cliff face β and the caves gradually enlarged into massive coastal sea arches. Eventually the massive coastal sea arches collapsed, leaving isolated vertical limestone pillars standing separately from the retreating main cliff face as the Southern Ocean gradually cut back the cliff line inland. Today's iconic Twelve Apostles vertical limestone sea stacks are essentially the last surviving fragments of the ancient continuous cliff face β the parts of the ancient cliff that have been temporarily preserved from erosion because their internal geological structure happens to be slightly more erosion-resistant than the surrounding limestone. The Twelve Apostles name is somewhat misleading β despite the extraordinary popular name, there have never actually been twelve individual sea stacks at the site. Historical documentation confirms that when the site was first named "the Twelve Apostles" in the 1920s (previously known as "the Sow and Piglets" in earlier local terminology), there were only nine documented sea stacks. Over the subsequent 100 years, several additional sea stacks have gradually collapsed into the Southern Ocean as continuing erosion undermines the vertical pillars. The most spectacular recent collapse occurred on July 3, 2005, when a massive 50-metre-tall Twelve Apostles sea stack collapsed spectacularly into the Southern Ocean directly in front of astonished tourists at the Twelve Apostles viewing platform β an extraordinary geological event captured on video by dozens of witnesses. As of today, only seven surviving vertical sea stacks remain visible at the Twelve Apostles site. Continuing scientific research documents ongoing gradual erosion of approximately 2 centimetres per year across the remaining stacks β meaning that all seven surviving Twelve Apostles will eventually collapse into the Southern Ocean, and new limestone sea stacks will eventually emerge from the retreating cliff face as new sections of ancient sea caves gradually collapse. The Twelve Apostles is protected within Port Campbell National Park (established 1964) and is now managed jointly by Parks Victoria and the traditional Aboriginal owners of the region β the Eastern Maar traditional owners, whose traditional cultural connection to this extraordinary coastline stretches back over 40,000 years. Standing quietly at the elevated Twelve Apostles viewing platform at 5:30 PM on a warm December afternoon, watching a Victorian sunset scenic helicopter circle dramatically above the seven surviving 45-metre-tall limestone sea stacks while massive Southern Ocean swells crash spectacularly against the base of each ancient pillar and the entire coastline burns in extraordinary coral and gold sunset light, is one of the most spectacular and quietly transcendent coastal landscape experiences anywhere on the entire Australian continent.
