The Whitsunday Islands sit directly within the extraordinary Great Barrier Reef Marine Park β€” the world's largest coral reef ecosystem and one of the most extraordinary marine wilderness areas anywhere on Earth. The Whitsunday Islands received their extraordinary English name from the legendary British Royal Navy explorer Captain James Cook, who sailed his ship HMS Endeavour through the extraordinary chain of islands on Whit Sunday (Pentecost Sunday) in early June 1770 β€” the seventh Sunday after Easter Sunday in the traditional Christian religious calendar. Cook's crew documented in the ship's log the extraordinary beauty of the tropical island archipelago they sailed through that day, and Cook applied the name "Whitsunday" to the entire chain of tropical islands. The Whitsunday Islands have been culturally significant to the Ngaro traditional Aboriginal people for over 10,000 years β€” long before Cook's 1770 exploration. The Ngaro Aboriginal people developed one of the most sophisticated ocean-going maritime cultures anywhere in traditional Australian Aboriginal cultural history β€” sailing extraordinary hand-crafted bark canoes throughout the entire Whitsunday island chain and out to the outer Great Barrier Reef edge in extraordinary maritime cultural traditions that continue in modified form to the present day. The most extraordinary single landscape feature in the entire Whitsunday Islands group β€” and one of the most-photographed tropical beach features anywhere on Earth β€” is Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. Whitehaven Beach stretches 7 kilometres along the eastern shoreline of Whitsunday Island β€” the largest of the 74 individual Whitsunday Islands. The beach's extraordinary distinctive feature is the extraordinary composition of the beach sand itself: Whitehaven Beach sand is composed of 98.9 percent pure silica (silicon dioxide) β€” one of the highest silica purity ratings of any beach anywhere on Earth. The extraordinarily high silica composition gives Whitehaven Beach sand its extraordinary distinctive brilliant warm cream-white appearance and its extraordinary distinctive cool tactile feel β€” the sand remains cool to walk on even in the direct tropical midday sunshine, an extraordinary sensory experience found on essentially no other beach anywhere on Earth. Modern scientific research has documented that the extraordinary silica sand of Whitehaven Beach did not originate from local Whitsunday Island geology β€” the sand was actually deposited on the beach by ocean currents flowing continuously from the extraordinary quartz deposits located approximately 400 kilometres to the south along the central Queensland coast over the past several tens of thousands of years. At the northern end of Whitehaven Beach sits the extraordinary Hill Inlet β€” the extraordinary iconic tidal-swirl pattern where the pure silica white beach sand mixes dramatically with the brilliant turquoise Coral Sea water in extraordinary swirling gradient patterns as ocean tidal currents flow across the beach. Aerial photographs of the extraordinary Hill Inlet tidal-swirl pattern have become one of the single most-photographed aerial views anywhere in tropical Australia. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (which encompasses the Whitsunday Islands) was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 β€” recognising the extraordinary ecological, biological, and evolutionary significance of the world's largest coral reef ecosystem. The Great Barrier Reef stretches across approximately 344,400 square kilometres of tropical ocean β€” an area larger than the entire land area of the United Kingdom β€” and contains extraordinary biological diversity including approximately 1,625 documented tropical fish species, 411 documented coral species, 133 documented shark and ray species, and 30 documented whale and dolphin species. Today the Whitsunday Islands are one of Australia's most beloved tropical charter-yacht sailing destinations. Approximately 500,000 international visitors travel to the Whitsundays every year β€” with the vast majority experiencing the Whitsunday Islands through charter-yacht sailing tours and catamaran cruises departing from the extraordinary Airlie Beach mainland resort town. Charter yacht sailing tours of 2-7 days duration explore the extraordinary spectacular Whitsunday Islands anchorages, moor for snorkelling and swimming at the outer Great Barrier Reef sites, and take extraordinary sunset dinner cruises through the calm turquoise waters of the Whitsunday Passage between Whitsunday Island and Hook Island. Standing quietly on the extraordinary teak deck of a Whitsunday sailing catamaran at 6:15 PM on a warm September evening, watching brilliant coral Great Barrier Reef sunset light catch billowing warm cream sails while the massive silhouettes of Whitsunday Island and Hook Island rise on the far horizon behind you and a curious green sea turtle surfaces briefly to breathe in the wake beside the catamaran hull, is one of the most quietly transcendent tropical sailing experiences anywhere on Earth. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“₯ HOW IT WORKS 1.
