π¨π₯ Paint the Land of Fire from the Caspian shore β Baku Flame Towers at burning sunset
The three massive 2013 modernist skyscrapers designed as three curving flame shapes rising 190 metres above the Baku skyline against a sky of blazing crimson, magenta and molten orange sunset. The mirrored glass facades of all three towers catching brilliant coral and gold sunset highlights in fractured coral and magenta reflections. Warm cream Baku Boulevard promenade in the foreground with elegant carved stone railings. The wide silver-blue Caspian Sea in the foreground reflecting the towers and the fiery sunset sky in shimmering gold, coral and magenta reflections. Warm silhouettes of an Azerbaijani couple strolling the promenade at sunset. Warm gold streetlamps beginning to glow. Warm cream ancient Baku Old City visible in the middle distance catching sunset warmth. Baku at sunset is Azerbaijan at its most spectacular and most photographed β the postcard shot of the Land of Fire, and the beating heart of the Caucasus Silk Road. And it is your painting.
Walk the Boulevard. Watch the towers catch fire. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Baku sits on the western shore of the Caspian Sea on the tip of the Absheron Peninsula, the capital of Azerbaijan and the largest city in the entire Caucasus region. The city has been inhabited for over 3,000 years β Bronze Age petroglyphs at nearby Gobustan document human occupation dating to at least 1000 BC. Azerbaijan is known in the Zoroastrian religion, in the Persian and Turkic languages, and in ancient Greek accounts as "Odlar Yurdu" β the "Land of Fire" β because of the extraordinary natural phenomenon that has defined the region for millennia: the massive underground natural gas deposits beneath the Absheron Peninsula seep continuously through fissures in the earth and, when ignited by lightning or human hand, burn indefinitely without extinction. These natural eternal flames have been sacred to Zoroastrians, fire-worshippers, and mystical traditions in the region for over 2,500 years, and the flames still burn today at sites like Yanar Dag ("Burning Mountain") just north of the city. It was these natural fires that gave rise to the world's first commercial oil industry: Baku's oil boom began in 1846 (14 years before the American oil rush), and by 1900 Baku was producing more than half of the entire world's oil supply. Nobel Prize-founding chemist Ludwig Nobel β brother of Alfred Nobel β made his fortune here at the head of the Branobel oil company. Baku was later occupied by the Soviet Union until Azerbaijani independence in 1991. After independence, Azerbaijan's new oil wealth funded a spectacular reconstruction of the Baku skyline. The Flame Towers β a symbolic architectural celebration of the country's "Land of Fire" identity β were designed by American architecture firm HOK, developed by DIA Holdings, and completed in 2013 at a total cost of $350 million. The three curving skyscraper towers are 190 metres tall each, containing residential apartments, offices, and the Fairmont Baku hotel. What makes the Flame Towers globally famous is their LED lighting system: over 10,000 high-power LED lights are installed across the entire mirrored glass exterior of all three towers, and every evening after sunset the towers are illuminated with a coordinated animated light show that projects the appearance of enormous dancing flames climbing the sides of the buildings for 40 minutes. The nightly light show has made the Baku skyline one of the most visually recognisable in the world. Below the Flame Towers sits the ancient UNESCO World Heritage inner walled Old City of Baku (Icheri Sheher) β a preserved medieval walled town with the 12th-century Maiden Tower, the 15th-century Shirvanshahs' Palace, and dozens of preserved medieval sandstone streets that have been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years. Baku Boulevard β the beautifully landscaped 20-kilometre Caspian Sea waterfront promenade β was originally laid out in 1909 and has since become one of the most beloved public spaces in the entire Caucasus. Baku is now Europe's easternmost capital city, host of the 2015 European Games, the 2016 Azerbaijan Grand Prix (still held annually on a street circuit that races directly past the Old City walls), and the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference COP29. Standing on Baku Boulevard at sunset in September, watching the three Flame Towers catch fire in the last light while the Caspian Sea burns coral and magenta behind you and the ancient Old City walls glow warm coral in the middle distance, is one of the most extraordinary urban sunset experiences in the world.
