π¨π Paint the mysterious smiling stone faces of Cambodia β the Bayon temple at Angkor Thom at sunset
Massive four-faced towers rising from the ancient jungle temple, each side carved with the serene smiling face of Avalokiteshvara, glowing warm coral and gold in the last light. Deep purple shadow settling between the towers. Dense subtropical jungle framing the composition. A burning magenta Cambodian sky pouring over the whole scene. The Bayon at sunset is one of the most photographed sacred sites in Southeast Asia β the enigmatic heart of the Angkor complex, and the postcard shot of Khmer civilisation. And it is your painting.
Follow the causeway. Look up. Let the brush find the smile. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Bayon stands at the exact geographical centre of Angkor Thom β the walled royal city that once served as the capital of the Khmer Empire β deep inside the jungles of northwest Cambodia. Angkor Thom and the Bayon were built at the very end of the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII (1181β1218), the greatest king of the Khmer Empire and the ruler who converted the state religion of Cambodia from Hinduism to Mahayana Buddhism. The Bayon was his personal state temple, and today it stands as one of the most extraordinary religious monuments ever built. Its most famous feature is the collection of massive stone face towers β originally 54 towers, of which 37 still survive β each carved with four serene smiling faces oriented to the four cardinal directions, giving a total of over 200 faces across the whole complex. The faces almost certainly represent Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, though some scholars believe they may also carry the features of Jayavarman VII himself β the god-king watching over his people from every direction at once. The Bayon is famous for its extraordinary bas-relief galleries: over 1.2 kilometres of carved sandstone panels depicting scenes of everyday life in 12th-century Cambodia, historic battles between the Khmer and the Cham, market scenes, cockfights, weddings and Hindu-Buddhist mythology β an unprecedented visual record of Khmer daily life 800 years ago. Angkor Wat, just a few kilometres to the south of the Bayon, is the more famous single temple β it appears on the Cambodian national flag and is the largest religious monument in the world by land area. But the entire Angkor complex covers over 400 square kilometres and includes hundreds of temples of which Bayon is one of the most magical. The whole Angkor Archaeological Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Standing in the middle of the Bayon at sunset, surrounded by 200 smiling faces watching quietly in every direction while the last light of Cambodia turns the stone gold, is one of the most mysteriously beautiful moments in Southeast Asia.
