π¨π Paint the diamond of Eastern Europe β Minsk National Library on a bright summer afternoon
The extraordinary 2006 futuristic 22-storey rhombicuboctahedron 24-sided glass and steel diamond-shaped modernist building rising against a deep cobalt sky with soft white clouds. The mirrored glass facades reflecting the cobalt sky and white clouds in brilliant fractured blue and white reflections. Warm cream stone base of the library catching brilliant afternoon light. Warm cobblestone plaza in the foreground filled with warm silhouettes of Belarusian children running, playing and feeding pigeons. Warm silhouettes of a Belarusian family sitting on a plaza bench with ice cream. Elegant warm bronze Francysk Skaryna statue and other sculptures around the base. Warm silhouettes of proud grandparents watching the children. Warm summer trees around the plaza in full green leaf. Warm gold pigeons rising in the air. The Minsk National Library is Belarus at its most futuristic and most beloved β the postcard shot of Belarusian modernism, and one of the strangest and most beautiful buildings on Earth. And it is your painting.
Cross the plaza on a Saturday afternoon. Feed the pigeons. Let the brush find the cobalt. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The National Library of Belarus (NacyjanaΔΊnaja biblijateka Bielarusi) stands on Independence Avenue in the eastern part of Minsk, roughly 5 kilometres from the historic city centre. The library itself was founded in September 1922, making it one of the oldest continuously operating national libraries in the entire post-Soviet region β but the extraordinary building visitors see today was only completed in 2006. The current library building was commissioned by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in 2002 and was designed by Belarusian architects Mikhail Vinogradov and Viktor Kramarenko in collaboration with an international team of engineers. The 22-storey building is one of the most architecturally unusual national libraries in the world. It is designed in the shape of a rhombicuboctahedron β a geometric solid composed of 26 faces including 18 square faces and 8 triangular faces, with 24 vertices β creating a distinctive faceted diamond-like appearance. The building rises 73.6 metres tall from a warm cream stone base plaza and holds approximately 10 million books, magazines, manuscripts, and other publications β including the world's largest collection of Belarusian-language publications and rare medieval manuscripts. What makes the building truly extraordinary is its exterior lighting system. Over 4,500 individual LED light panels are installed across the entire 24-sided diamond exterior, and every evening between sunset and midnight the building displays a coordinated animated LED light show that projects intricate geometric patterns, moving colours, and β during major national holidays β Belarusian national symbols and traditional Belarusian folk art motifs across the entire building's exterior. The nightly light show has made the National Library one of the most-photographed buildings in all of Belarus and has drawn architectural photographers from around the world. The elegant plaza surrounding the base of the library features a monument to Francysk Skaryna, the pioneering 16th-century Belarusian humanist, physician, and Renaissance scholar who translated and printed the first ever Bible in a Slavic language (the Belarusian language) in 1517 β nine years before Martin Luther published his own German-language Bible translation. Skaryna's translation was groundbreaking and made him one of the most important figures in the entire history of Slavic literature. His bronze statue stands at the western entrance to the library plaza. Belarus itself is one of Europe's least-visited countries, drawing only approximately 400,000-500,000 international tourists per year due to visa restrictions and geopolitical isolation. But those who do visit the National Library find one of the strangest and most beautiful contemporary buildings anywhere in the world β a spectacular geometric diamond that houses one of the finest collections of Slavic literature on the planet, standing on a plaza where Belarusian families still gather every summer evening to feed the pigeons, walk their children, and watch the light show. Standing on the plaza on a warm July afternoon while Belarusian grandmothers watch their grandchildren chase pigeons across the warm cobblestone in front of a 22-storey mirror diamond reflecting the summer sky, is one of the quietest and most human urban experiences in all of Eastern Europe.
