They built their houses from leftover corrugated iron and scrap wood from the shipyards, and painted them with whatever marine paint the dockworkers had left over at the end of the day — which is why no two panels are ever the same colour. In the 1950s, Argentine painter Benito Quinquela Martín — who grew up in La Boca — turned the abandoned alley on Calle Caminito into an open-air museum, restoring the colours, adding sculpture and tile, and naming it after a famous 1926 tango, "Caminito." Today it is one of the most photographed streets in Latin America, and the beating heart of Buenos Aires tango culture.
