π¨π Paint the most photographed bridge on Earth β the Golden Gate on a bright California afternoon
Massive International Orange steel spanning the Golden Gate strait against a deep cobalt sky. Small colourful sailboats cutting across the silver-blue Pacific below the bridge. A cyclist crossing the pedestrian path. Dense green Presidio cypress trees framing the composition. Warm Marin Headlands rising in the distance. The Golden Gate on a bright afternoon is San Francisco at its most joyful β the single most photographed bridge on Earth, and the postcard shot of California. And it is your painting.
Feel the breeze off the Pacific. Watch the sailboats tack. Let the brush find the orange. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate β the narrow strait where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean. Construction began on January 5, 1933, in the depth of the Great Depression, and the bridge opened to the public on May 27, 1937, at the time the longest suspension bridge in the world at 2,737 metres total length, with a main span of 1,280 metres between its two Art Deco towers. Building the bridge was one of the great engineering feats of the 20th century. The Golden Gate strait is deep, cold, and swept by strong tides and heavy Pacific swells β most engineers of the era considered it impossible to span. The project was led by chief engineer Joseph Strauss with architect Irving Morrow (who designed the streamlined Art Deco styling) and structural engineer Charles Alton Ellis (who did most of the mathematics). Construction cost $35 million, and β remarkably for the era β used a first-of-its-kind safety net beneath the bridge that saved the lives of 19 workers, who called themselves the "Halfway to Hell Club." The signature colour, International Orange (Pantone 173), was chosen by Morrow specifically because it complemented the surrounding hillsides, remained visible in the region's thick fog, and enhanced the bridge's silhouette against the sky. The Navy had originally wanted it painted with black-and-yellow horizontal stripes for wartime visibility. The bridge's Art Deco towers rise 227 metres above the water. Its main cables are 92 centimetres in diameter β the largest ever spun at the time β each containing 27,572 individual wires. Two full-time painters continuously repaint the bridge from end to end year-round, and have never stopped since 1937. On its opening day, 200,000 pedestrians crossed the bridge before any cars were allowed on. Today the Golden Gate carries around 100,000 vehicles a day and is a designated Wonder of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It has appeared in over 1,000 films, from Vertigo to Star Trek to The Rock. Standing on Baker Beach at low tide, watching sailboats cut through the strait beneath 227 metres of orange steel, is one of the most exhilarating views in the American West.
