The name comes from Yucatec Maya and means "at the mouth of the well of the Itzá" — a reference to the massive sacred cenote that dominated the site. Chichén Itzá was one of the largest and most powerful cities of the Maya civilisation, flourishing between roughly 600 AD and 1200 AD as a religious, political and commercial capital that drew pilgrims and traders from across Mesoamerica. El Castillo — the Temple of Kukulcán — is the most famous monument at the site: a 30-metre stepped pyramid with four stairways of 91 steps each, plus the temple platform at the top, totalling exactly 365 steps — one for every day of the solar year. On the spring and autumn equinoxes, the late-afternoon sun casts a sinuous shadow of Kukulcán, the feathered serpent god, descending the north stairway — an intentional astronomical effect designed by Maya architects over a thousand years ago and still perfectly precise today.
