π¨ποΈ Paint the most photographed peaks in North America β the Maroon Bells with a bull moose in the meadow
Twin burgundy and rust-red bell-shaped peaks rising against a deep cobalt sky. Warm gold and coral aspen groves ablaze on the mountainsides. A massive bull moose with impressive antlers standing in the willow-lined meadow. Dense dark spruce framing the composition. The Maroon Bells in autumn are one of the most photographed mountain scenes on Earth β the postcard shot of Colorado, and the beating heart of the Elk Mountains. And it is your painting.
Wait for the moose to lift his head. Watch the aspens catch fire. Let the brush find the burgundy. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Maroon Bells rise in the Elk Mountains just outside Aspen, Colorado, inside the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness of the White River National Forest. The two peaks β Maroon Peak at 4,315 metres and North Maroon Peak at 4,275 metres β are the most photographed mountains in North America, and one of the most photographed scenes on Earth. The distinctive burgundy and rust-red colour of the rock is what gives the mountains their name. Unlike the granite and limestone that make up most Rocky Mountain peaks, the Maroon Bells are composed of mudstone β sedimentary rock formed roughly 300 million years ago from layers of ancient river silt and clay. That mudstone is what geologists call "unstable" β the rock is soft, brittle and prone to rockslides, which is why the Bells have earned the ominous nickname "The Deadly Bells." A signboard at the Maroon Lake trailhead famously reads: "The beautiful Maroon Bells have claimed many lives in the past few years." Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the Bells are one of the most-visited landmarks in Colorado β nearly 300,000 people each year, most of them coming in late September and early October to see the aspens turn. The forest around Maroon Lake is dominated by quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), the most widely distributed tree species in North America. Aspens grow in genetically identical clonal colonies β every tree in a stand shares one massive underground root system, meaning an entire hillside of golden autumn aspens can technically be a single organism. The famous Pando clone in Utah β a single aspen colony over 100 acres in size β is one of the oldest and heaviest living organisms on Earth. Bull moose (Alces alces shirasi) roam the valley year-round. They are the largest members of the deer family in North America β a mature bull can stand 2.1 metres at the shoulder, weigh over 500 kilograms, and carry antlers spanning nearly 1.8 metres. Moose are excellent swimmers and have poor eyesight but exceptional hearing and sense of smell. Standing quietly on the Maroon Lake trail at sunrise in October, watching a bull moose step out of the willows against the burgundy peaks and blazing gold aspens, is one of the most quietly cinematic experiences in the American Rockies.
