Paint one of the New 7 Wonders in its wildest weather - the Roman Colosseum under a lightning storm
Warm honey travertine rising in bold silhouette against a wall of dark purple and slate storm clouds. Brilliant white lightning forking above the arches. Sheets of silver rain sweeping across the piazza. Wet Roman cobblestones catching the light. Umbrella pines in deep silhouette on the horizon. The Colosseum in a thunderstorm is the Eternal City at its most cinematic and most powerful — a wonder that has stood through every kind of weather for 2,000 years, painted in the middle of the wildest one. And it is your painting.
Watch the clouds gather over the Palatine. Feel the pressure drop. Let the brush find the lightning. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas — both are included.

✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Colosseum — properly the Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium) — stands in the heart of Rome as the largest amphitheatre ever built and the single most recognisable structure of the Roman Empire. Construction was begun in 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian, funded by the spoils of the sack of Jerusalem, and completed in 80 AD by his son Emperor Titus, who inaugurated it with 100 consecutive days of games. The finished amphitheatre could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators — comparable to a modern football stadium — and hosted gladiator combats, staged wild animal hunts, mock naval battles (the arena could actually be flooded through an ingenious water system beneath the floor), and public executions for nearly 400 years. The structure is a monumental feat of Roman engineering: 189 metres long, 156 metres wide, and 48 metres tall, built from over 100,000 cubic metres of travertine limestone quarried from Tivoli and moved by ox-cart along a purpose-built road. The characteristic pattern of tiered arches uses three of the Greek classical orders stacked from ground up — Doric, Ionic and Corinthian — a Roman innovation that influenced two thousand years of architecture after it. The Colosseum was damaged by lightning strikes and earthquakes repeatedly over the centuries — most famously the great earthquake of 1349 AD, which collapsed the entire southern outer wall (the reason the modern Colosseum has that dramatic gap you see in every photo). During the Middle Ages, Roman families quarried stone from the ruins to build churches and palaces across the city, including parts of St Peter's Basilica. Preservation efforts began under Pope Benedict XIV in the 18th century, who consecrated the site to the Christian martyrs believed to have died there. Today the Colosseum receives over 7 million visitors a year, was declared part of Rome's Historic Centre UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, and was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Roman thunderstorms are famously violent in summer and autumn — brief, powerful, and often ending in the kind of golden broken light that has been drawing painters to this city since the Grand Tour of the 1700s. Rome has been called the Eternal City for two thousand years. The Colosseum is one of the reasons why.
