π¨β Paint the last of America's wooden whaling ships at sunset β Mystic Seaport and the Charles W. Morgan
The historic three-masted whaling ship silhouetted against a burning magenta and orange Connecticut sky. Small colourful working lobster boats in blazing red, deep blue and white moored on the still Mystic River. Warm cedar-shingle 19th-century shipyard buildings catching the last light. Seagulls silhouetted crossing the sky. Mystic Seaport at sunset is New England at its most soulful and most nostalgic β the largest maritime museum in America, and the last surviving wooden whaling ship on Earth. And it is your painting.
Feel the salt air. Hear the halyards clink. Let the brush find the magenta. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Mystic Seaport in the village of Mystic, Connecticut, is the largest maritime museum in the United States β a 19-acre living-history village on the Mystic River that recreates a 19th-century New England coastal community, complete with over 60 historic buildings, dozens of restored watercraft, a working shipyard, and craftspeople practicing traditional trades like coopering, blacksmithing, sail-making and rigging. The museum was founded in 1929 by three local men β Edward Bradley, Charles Stillman and Carl Cutler β who wanted to preserve the fast-disappearing maritime heritage of the American East Coast. The heart of Mystic Seaport is the Charles W. Morgan β the last surviving wooden whaling ship in the world and a National Historic Landmark. She was built in 1841 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and served as an active whaling ship for 80 years β an astonishingly long career β completing 37 voyages that took her across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. During her career the Morgan sailed roughly 550,000 kilometres and took over 2,700 whales. She was retired in 1921 and eventually moved to Mystic Seaport in 1941, where a decades-long restoration project completed in 2014 saw her rebuilt to sailing condition and taken on her 38th voyage β a ceremonial sail up the New England coast to celebrate the maritime tradition of the region. The whaling industry that the Morgan represents was, for over a century, one of the largest industries in New England β supplying oil for lamps and lubrication across the entire industrial revolution. New Bedford, Nantucket and Mystic itself were among the richest ports in the world in the mid-1800s. The lobster boats depicted in this scene are still working traditional Downeast-style boats β the classic New England working craft with high-flared bows and open sterns, designed for hauling lobster traps in coastal waters. Every one of them is hand-painted in bright working colours so they can be spotted at sea. Standing on the Mystic Seaport dock at sunset, watching the Morgan silhouetted against a burning sky beside a row of colourful working boats, is to stand at the exact edge of nostalgia in America β the place where wooden ships and New England coastal life still live, and always will.
