Key West itself is only 6.5 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide, is closer to Havana (145 kilometres) than to Miami (260 kilometres), and holds the geographical distinction of being the southernmost city in the continental United States. Mallory Square, on the western tip of the island facing the Gulf of Mexico, was named after Stephen Mallory, a Key West resident who served as the Secretary of the Navy of the Confederacy. Every single evening — 365 days a year, weather permitting — the Sunset Celebration takes place on the plaza in the two hours before sunset. It began organically in the 1960s and 1970s when Key West's growing community of artists, musicians, tarot readers, jugglers, fire eaters, escape artists and food vendors began gathering to entertain the crowd. The tradition was formalised in 1984 when the Cultural Preservation Society was founded to organise the vendors and performers. Key West itself has a long, colourful history: founded as Cayo Hueso ("Bone Cay") by Spanish settlers, it became American in 1822, was for much of the 19th century one of the wealthiest cities in America per capita due to salvage work on Spanish shipwrecks, and later became a haven for cigar rollers, writers and musicians.
