π¨π¦Ά Paint the funniest bird on Earth β a blue-footed booby on a GalΓ‘pagos cliff
Brilliant turquoise-blue feet standing improbably on warm volcanic rock. Sharp yellow eyes. Striking white and brown plumage. Waves crashing on black lava below. The deep turquoise Pacific stretching to the horizon. And a bird that looks like it borrowed its shoes from a cartoon. The blue-footed booby is the single most beloved animal in the GalΓ‘pagos β and the most joyful subject in South American wildlife painting. And it is your painting.
Steady the brush. Try not to smile. Let the paint find the turquoise. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The GalΓ‘pagos Islands sit roughly 1,000 kilometres west of Ecuador in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The archipelago was formed by a volcanic hotspot beneath the Nazca tectonic plate over the last 8 million years β the islands are still actively volcanic, with Fernandina and Isabela erupting most recently within the last decade. GalΓ‘pagos National Park was created in 1959 (Ecuador's very first national park) and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 β the first place on Earth to receive that designation. What makes the GalΓ‘pagos famous is not the volcanoes but the fact that, because the islands are so remote and so isolated, the animals that arrived here evolved in complete isolation from mainland species β producing an extraordinary collection of endemic wildlife found nowhere else on Earth: giant tortoises, marine iguanas, Darwin's finches, and the blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii). In September 1835, a young naturalist named Charles Darwin arrived aboard HMS Beagle and spent five weeks studying the islands. What he saw here β the same species subtly different from island to island β became the observational foundation for On the Origin of Species and the theory of evolution by natural selection. The blue-footed booby is one of the most beloved of GalΓ‘pagos species. The colour of their feet comes entirely from fresh fish in their diet β the brighter and more vivid the turquoise, the healthier the bird and the more attractive to mates. Courting males perform a slow, high-stepping dance to show off their feet, lifting each blue foot in turn while whistling to the female. Females choose the male with the brightest feet. The Spanish word "bobo," from which "booby" comes, means "stupid" or "clown" β sailors gave them the name because the birds were so unafraid of humans on land that they were easy to catch. Today they are one of the most photographed birds on the planet, protected by the GalΓ‘pagos National Park and the Ecuadorian government, and standing exactly where their ancestors have stood for millions of years, on rocks that are still rising out of the sea.
