It's a piece of medieval engineering that still astonishes: two enormous wooden treadwheels inside the brick towers, walked by hand and foot, could hoist four tons of cargo twenty-seven metres into the air or raise a ship's mast in a single lift. For centuries it was the busiest crane on the Baltic. The colourful narrow houses along the Długie Pobrzeże belonged to merchants who grew wealthy on grain, amber, and timber shipped through this port. Nearly all of it — the crane, the houses, the whole Main Town — was flattened in 1945 and painstakingly rebuilt from old photographs and paintings, brick by brick.
