π¨β°οΈ Paint the sacred church on the mountain β Gergeti Trinity Church beneath Mount Kazbek at golden hour
The historic 14th-century warm cream stone Georgian Orthodox monastery church with its distinctive tall conical stone bell tower and cross-shaped nave standing on its lone hilltop against the backdrop of the massive 5,054-metre snow-capped Mount Kazbek rising in the background against a burning amber sky. Warm cream stone church glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light. Brilliant white snow-capped Mount Kazbek catching brilliant coral and gold alpenglow. Warm Caucasus alpine meadow in the foreground bursting with brilliant clusters of Caucasus wildflowers β brilliant crimson red poppies, deep purple gentians, warm yellow buttercup, pink asters, warm blue forget-me-nots and brilliant white edelweiss β cascading across the meadow catching the golden light. Warm silhouette of a Georgian shepherd resting on a large boulder watching his sheep grazing. Gergeti at golden hour is Georgia at its most sacred and most legendary β the postcard shot of the Caucasus, and the church that has watched Mount Kazbek for 700 years. And it is your painting.
Hike up the switchbacks. Watch the church catch fire. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Gergeti Trinity Church β known in Georgian as Tsminda Sameba (literally "Holy Trinity") β stands at 2,170 metres on a lone hilltop above the small mountain village of Gergeti in the Kazbegi district of northern Georgia, just 5 kilometres south of the Russian border and within the vast Kazbegi National Park. The church sits directly beneath Mount Kazbek β Georgian for "the Ice-Peak" β the massive 5,054-metre dormant stratovolcano that dominates the entire central Caucasus range. Mount Kazbek is the third-highest peak in Georgia and one of the most sacred mountains in the entire South Caucasus region. Gergeti Trinity Church was constructed in the 14th century, most likely between 1330 and 1350, during the reign of King Bagrat V of Georgia. It was built by the Georgian Orthodox Church specifically at this dramatic hilltop location for two reasons: first, to consecrate the mountain approach to the sacred pass through the Caucasus (the Darial Gorge, the ancient historical crossing between Georgia and Russia known in Persian sources as the "Gate of the Alans"), and second, to serve as a mountain refuge where the most sacred treasures of the Georgian church β including the ancient Cross of St Nino, the holy woman who first Christianised Georgia in the 4th century β could be hidden during periods of Persian and Ottoman invasions of the Georgian lowlands. Multiple times over the following centuries, the treasures of Mtskheta Cathedral (Georgia's principal religious site 175 kilometres to the south) were carried up the mountain to Gergeti for safekeeping, and the church earned its enduring reputation as the "Refuge Church" of the Georgian Orthodox faith. The church is built entirely of local grey and warm cream Kazbegi granite, in the distinctive medieval Georgian architectural style: a compact cross-shaped nave with a tall conical bell tower attached to the side, an elegant carved stone entrance portal, small deep-set windows to withstand the extreme mountain weather, and a low surrounding stone monastery wall. The interior remains largely as it was in the 14th century β plain grey stone walls, a single carved stone iconostasis screen, and a wooden altar. Between 1988 and 1991, during the collapse of the Soviet Union, an Austrian-Georgian mountaineering team built a controversial cable car from the valley village of Stepantsminda to the church to provide easier access for pilgrims and tourists. Local Georgian villagers and Orthodox clergy were so offended by the cable car β which they felt violated the sacred and difficult pilgrimage nature of the mountain β that they dismantled it within just a few years. Today, visitors must still make the traditional pilgrimage on foot or in specially adapted 4x4 vehicles up the steep 4-kilometre switchback trail from Stepantsminda, ascending nearly 600 metres of elevation. The village of Stepantsminda (population approximately 1,300) sits in the Terek River valley below the church, and the entire region is part of the historic Georgian Military Road β the ancient trade route that has connected the Caucasus valleys for over 2,000 years. Kazbegi National Park was established in 1979 and covers 90 square kilometres of alpine terrain including glaciated Caucasus peaks, sub-alpine meadows, and sacred oak groves. The region hosts one of the most spectacular displays of Caucasus alpine wildflowers in the world every summer between June and August β including endangered species like the Caucasian Rhododendron (Rhododendron caucasicum), the Kazbek Delphinium, and the Georgian primrose (Primula juliae). Standing on the mountain meadow at golden hour on a July afternoon, watching the last light hit 700-year-old grey Georgian granite while wild crimson poppies bloom at your feet and Mount Kazbek catches brilliant coral alpenglow behind the church, is one of the most sacred and unforgettable landscape experiences on the entire Caucasus range.
