π¨β² Paint the beating heart of the Deep South β the Forsyth Park Fountain under Savannah's Spanish moss oaks
An elegant white cast-iron three-tiered fountain from 1858 glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light against a burning amber sky. Massive ancient Southern live oaks draped heavily in silver-grey Spanish moss framing the composition. Warm cream and honey antebellum mansions visible in the background. Warm brick pathways in the foreground. Dappled sunlight filtering through the moss. Forsyth Park at golden hour is Savannah at its most photographed and most beautiful β the beating heart of the American South, in the most storied historic district in the country. And it is your painting.
Stroll under the moss. Listen to the fountain. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Savannah was founded on February 12, 1733, by General James Oglethorpe β the last of the original 13 English colonies in America, and the very first planned city in North America. Oglethorpe laid out Savannah on a remarkable grid of 24 public squares (22 of which still survive today) β each one surrounded by residential and commercial lots, forming what urban planners consider one of the most beautifully designed historic downtowns in the world. The entire Savannah Historic District β over 8 square kilometres of preserved 18th and 19th-century mansions, churches, cobblestone streets and live-oak-shaded squares β was declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1966. Forsyth Park itself is the largest of Savannah's public parks, established in the 1840s on 12 acres in the southern section of the historic downtown. Its iconic cast-iron fountain, made in the North during the Civil War era and shipped to Savannah, was installed in 1858. It is a three-tiered French-inspired design featuring a central pedestal, cascading basins and figures of Tritons, and remains one of the most photographed monuments in the American South. Savannah is famous for its towering Southern live oaks (Quercus virginiana) β a species that can live over 300 years, spread more than 30 metres in canopy diameter, and support the drooping curtains of Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) that give the city its unmistakable atmosphere. Spanish moss is not actually Spanish, not moss, and not a parasite β it is an air plant (bromeliad) in the pineapple family, native to the American Southeast, that gets all its nutrients from air and rain and simply uses the oak branches as a place to hang. Some of Savannah's live oaks are over 250 years old and were already mature trees when General Oglethorpe first laid out the city grid. During the Civil War, Savannah famously surrendered peacefully to General Sherman on December 21, 1864 β a decision that spared the entire historic district from destruction and preserved the antebellum architecture that draws over 15 million visitors a year today. Standing under a Spanish-moss oak in Forsyth Park at golden hour, listening to the fountain and watching the light hit the antebellum mansions the way it has for nearly 300 years, is one of the most soulful experiences you can have anywhere in America.
