π¨ποΈ Paint the last of the Montana glaciers β Grinnell Lake and its shrinking cirque in Glacier National Park
Electric milky-turquoise water. A vast horseshoe of towering slate and dark red argillite cliffs. Brilliant white cascades pouring down the walls from the melt. And the Grinnell Glacier itself β hanging like a shrinking white curtain on the far cliff. Grinnell Lake is Glacier National Park at its most fragile, most breathtaking and most photographed β a moment in geological time you can still walk to. And it is your painting.
Lace the hiking boots. Follow the switchbacks up the valley. Let the brush find the turquoise. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Glacier National Park was established on May 11, 1910 β America's tenth national park β thanks largely to the campaigning of one man: George Bird Grinnell, editor of Forest and Stream magazine and one of the founders of the American conservation movement. Grinnell called this stretch of the northern Rockies the "Crown of the Continent," and spent decades pushing Congress to protect it. Grinnell Glacier, Grinnell Lake, Grinnell Point and Mount Grinnell are all named after him. When Grinnell first explored this valley in 1885, the park held roughly 150 active glaciers, some of them over 5 kilometres across. Today, thanks to a warming climate, only 25 named glaciers remain β and scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey estimate all of them will be gone within decades. Grinnell Glacier is the most visible and most studied of them. Since 1966 it has lost about 45 percent of its area, and the milky turquoise colour of Grinnell Lake is caused by "glacial flour" β rock ground into powder so fine by the moving ice that it stays suspended in the meltwater and scatters sunlight into that impossible shade. In 1932, Glacier joined with Canada's Waterton Lakes National Park to form the world's first International Peace Park β a symbol of the friendship between the two countries. It was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1976 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Every metre of turquoise you paint on this canvas is water made from ice that is going away.
