Its rock layers record nearly two billion years of Earth's history — the oldest exposed rocks at the bottom of the gorge, the Vishnu Basement Rocks, were formed 1.75 billion years ago, long before there was multicellular life on the planet. The Colorado River carved the canyon itself in a geological instant — roughly the last five to six million years — cutting through layer after layer of sandstone, limestone and shale to create the striped red-and-coral walls the canyon is famous for. Indigenous peoples have lived in and around the canyon for at least 12,000 years. Eleven Native American tribes maintain ancestral ties to it today, including the Havasupai, whose village of Supai sits at the bottom of a side canyon and remains one of the most remote populated places in the continental United States. In 1869, one-armed Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell led the first known river expedition through the entire canyon on wooden boats — a 1,500-kilometre journey that lost half its men and most of its supplies. Grand Canyon National Park was established in 1919, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and voted one of the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World in 2007.
