π¨πΈ Paint one of the New 7 Wonders in full spring bloom β the Great Wall of China at Badaling
Warm cream stone winding along the emerald mountain ridges. Watchtowers rising against a brilliant blue sky. Delicate pink and white cherry blossoms and wild plum trees blooming along the base of the ancient wall. Fresh green grass covering the peaks. Silver mist curling through the mountains. The Great Wall in spring is the wonder at its most hopeful, most joyful and most beautiful β a 2,300-year-old fortress standing quietly through another blossoming April. And it is your painting.
Feel the spring breeze. Watch the petals fall on the stone. Let the brush find the pink. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Great Wall of China is the single largest ancient construction project in human history. Built and rebuilt across more than two thousand years by successive Chinese dynasties, it stretches an astonishing 21,196 kilometres from the Bohai Sea in the east to the Gobi Desert in the west β more than half the circumference of the Earth. The earliest sections were built in the 7th century BC by rival Warring States kingdoms. In 221 BC, Emperor Qin Shi Huang β the first emperor of a unified China β connected the existing fortifications into a single defensive line to protect the empire from northern nomadic invasions. Over the following centuries, the Han, Sui, Jin and Yuan dynasties all extended and reinforced the wall. But the majestic stone-and-brick wall the world knows today β the one at Badaling, Mutianyu and Jinshanling β was built almost entirely by the Ming dynasty between 1368 and 1644 as a defence against the Mongols. The Ming builders used over 100 million tonnes of brick, stone and lime mortar mixed with sticky rice β a natural cement so strong that modern engineers have struggled to replicate it. Countless workers gave their lives to the project; local legend says the mortar of the wall is bound with their spirits. Badaling, about 70 kilometres northwest of Beijing, was the first section restored and opened to the public in 1957 and is the most visited and most photographed section of the wall in the world. Every April, wild plum and cherry blossom trees along the base bloom in soft pink and white β a scene the Ming poets wrote about 500 years ago. The Great Wall was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Standing on the parapet in spring, looking east or west along the wall as it disappears over the ridges, is to stand on top of 2,300 years of human effort β a wall that outlasted every empire that built it, and blooms every year regardless.
