π¨π Paint the meeting point of East and West β the Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus at sunset
Massive Byzantine dome and four Ottoman minarets glowing brilliant coral and gold in the last light. Warm cream and rose stone catching the burning magenta sky. Small Turkish fishing boats and ferries drifting on the silver Bosphorus below. Distant hills of Asian Istanbul rising across the water in soft blue silhouette. Tall cypress framing the composition. The Hagia Sophia at sunset over the Bosphorus is Istanbul at its most photographed β the postcard shot of a city that has been the crossroads of the world for 1,700 years. And it is your painting.
Board the ferry. Watch two continents catch fire. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Hagia Sophia β αΌΞ³Ξ―Ξ± ΣοΟΞ―Ξ± in Greek, Ayasofya in Turkish, meaning "Holy Wisdom" β stands on the summit of the first hill of Istanbul, overlooking the Bosphorus at the exact geographical point where Europe meets Asia. It was commissioned in 532 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I following the destruction of two earlier cathedrals on the site, and completed just five years later in 537 AD by the mathematicians Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus β the shortest construction time of any comparable monument in history. On its inauguration day, Justinian is said to have walked into the completed basilica, looked up at the vast dome floating above him, and said "Solomon, I have surpassed thee." For nearly 1,000 years β from 537 AD until 1453 AD β the Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral in the world and the mother church of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the crown jewel of the Byzantine Empire, and the coronation church of every Byzantine emperor for the entire millennium. The central dome, 55 metres above the floor and 31 metres wide, was an engineering miracle: an "impossible" architecture where the dome appears to float weightlessly on a ring of 40 arched windows, all held up by an ingenious system of pendentives that was invented specifically for this building. In 1453 AD, Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople and personally rode his horse into the Hagia Sophia β he ordered it immediately converted into a mosque, added the four soaring minarets over the following centuries, plastered over the Christian mosaics, and made it the imperial mosque of the Ottoman Sultans for the next 481 years. In 1935, the founder of modern Turkey Mustafa Kemal AtatΓΌrk secularised the building and turned it into a museum for the world. In July 2020, the Turkish government reconverted it into a working mosque. The building was declared part of Istanbul's Historic Areas UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Today the Hagia Sophia holds the extraordinary distinction of having been a Christian church for 916 years, and a mosque for over 500. Standing on a ferry crossing the Bosphorus at sunset, watching the dome and minarets glow coral and gold above the water where two continents meet, is to look at a single building that has watched over the crossroads of the world for very nearly 1,500 years.
