Kauai is roughly 5.1 million years old, formed by a single shield volcano that has been eroded by rain and wind and Pacific swell for millions of years into the razor-sharp emerald ridges and hidden valleys the coast is famous for today. The cliffs rise up to 1,200 metres straight out of the ocean and are considered by geologists to be among the tallest sea cliffs on Earth. The name Nā Pali means "the cliffs" in the Hawaiian language — an understatement of local proportion. This entire coastline is only accessible by three means: hiking the notoriously difficult 18-kilometre Kalalau Trail; sailing or motoring past on a boat tour; or sea kayaking. Sea kayaking the Nā Pali Coast is considered one of the most challenging and rewarding paddling experiences in the world — a full-day expedition of 27 kilometres open-ocean along the base of the cliffs, past sea caves large enough to paddle a kayak into, and beneath waterfalls that pour directly from the cliffs into the sea from hundreds of metres above. The Nā Pali was inhabited by Native Hawaiians for over 1,000 years — remnants of ancient stone-terraced taro fields and heiau (sacred temples) can still be found in the deep valleys of Kalalau, Nu'alolo Kai and Miloli'i. By the mid-19th century, the last permanent residents had left, and the entire coast is now protected as the Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park (established in 1983) — 26 square kilometres of legally protected wilderness where no roads, buildings or vehicles are allowed. The coast has appeared in dozens of major films — including Six Days Seven Nights — because Hollywood has never found anything quite like it anywhere else on Earth.
