π¨πΆ Paint the quietest corner of the Rockies β a canoe on Redfish Lake beneath Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains
A warm cedar-wood canoe drifting on crystal-clear turquoise water. Jagged snow-capped granite Sawtooth peaks rising sharply in brilliant white and warm granite against a deep cobalt sky. Dense lodgepole pine forest lining the far shore. Warm cream sandy beach in the foreground. Brilliant reflections of the peaks in the mirror-still water. Redfish Lake in the Sawtooth wilderness is Idaho at its most peaceful and most beautiful β the quiet giant of the American Rockies, and the postcard shot of the Gem State. And it is your painting.
Push off from the beach. Let the paddle glide. Let the brush find the granite. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Sawtooth Mountains rise in the wild heart of central Idaho, forming one of the most spectacular and least-visited alpine ranges in the entire American West. The range takes its name from the impossibly jagged silhouette of its granite peaks β over 50 of them rising above 3,000 metres, with more than 40 summits carved into the sharp, sawblade-like profile that gives the mountains their name. Redfish Lake sits at the northeastern base of the range at an elevation of 1,995 metres β a long, narrow glacial lake carved out during the last ice age when massive glaciers moved south out of the Sawtooths and gouged deep valleys into the basin below. The lake gets its name from the sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) β locally called "redfish" for their brilliant crimson spawning colours β that once swam here in the tens of thousands. This is one of the most extraordinary salmon migrations in nature: the sockeye of Redfish Lake are born here, swim over 1,400 kilometres downstream through the Salmon and Snake Rivers to the Columbia and the Pacific Ocean, live in the sea for two to three years, and then return the entire way back upstream β climbing more than 2,000 metres in elevation and passing eight dams β to spawn in the exact lake where they were born. It is one of the longest and highest salmon migrations on Earth. By 1992, dams and habitat loss had reduced the run to a single fish β a lone male named "Lonesome Larry" who returned that year to find no mates. Since then, an extraordinary captive breeding and restoration programme has slowly brought the run back β from that single fish to over 1,500 returning sockeye in the best recent years. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area was established in 1972 and protects 3,300 square kilometres of wilderness β the largest contiguous wildlands area in the lower 48 United States. It contains over 700 lakes, 40 peaks over 3,000 metres, and some of the darkest night skies in America. Redfish Lake is the beating heart of it all: on any summer morning, the peaks reflect perfectly in the still water, canoes drift silently between the pines, and one of the great salmon stories of the American West still plays out in the depths below.
