It was first protected as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966 after decades of grassroots campaigning by the Save the Dunes Council — a fight that spanned nearly 50 years against the encroachment of the surrounding steel mills and power plants. On February 15, 2019, it was elevated to full national park status, becoming America's 61st national park and Indiana's first. Despite its industrial neighbours, the park protects one of the most botanically diverse ecosystems in the National Park System — over 1,100 native plant species, more than Yellowstone, Great Smoky Mountains or Grand Canyon national parks. The dunes themselves are the result of the last ice age. When the great glaciers retreated from the Midwest roughly 14,000 years ago, they left behind Lake Michigan and vast quantities of sand along its southern shore. Prevailing winds off the lake have been piling and shifting that sand into massive dunes ever since. Mount Baldy — the star of Indiana Dunes — is what geologists call a "wandering dune." Because the vegetation that once anchored it has largely died off, Mount Baldy is now free to migrate: it moves southward, inland and away from the lake, at an average rate of 1.2 metres per year. Since 1938 the dune has advanced over 90 metres inland, slowly burying the pine and oak forest behind it. Mount Baldy stands 38 metres above the beach at Lake Michigan — the tallest active dune in the park and one of the tallest freshwater dunes on Earth. Because of the dune's ongoing movement and several sinkhole discoveries in 2013 (rare "buried tree" collapses), access to Mount Baldy is now guided by rangers on scheduled seasonal tours — the only way to legally climb it.
