In the mid-1800s, the county was home to 19 covered wooden bridges — timber-truss bridges roofed and walled in to protect the wooden structure beneath from Iowa's harsh winters, which could rot exposed truss timbers in as little as 20 years. Six of those original bridges still survive today, and Madison County remains the most densely-covered-bridge-populated county in the American Midwest. Roseman Bridge — the star of this scene — was built in 1883 by county carpenter Benton Jones at a cost of $945. It spans Middle River in a rural corner of the county, is 32 metres long, and was constructed using the Town lattice truss system — a wooden construction method patented by Ithiel Town in 1820 that uses overlapping planks pinned with wooden dowels ("trunnels") in a diamond lattice pattern, allowing local carpenters to build a strong long-span bridge with nothing more than sawn lumber and hand tools. The bridge was restored in 1992 by the Madison County Historical Society and is a listed National Historic Landmark. Roseman Bridge became world-famous in 1992 when Iowa author Robert James Waller published his novel The Bridges of Madison County — a bestselling love story about a fictional four-day affair between a National Geographic photographer named Robert Kincaid and an Italian war bride named Francesca Johnson, most of which takes place around Roseman Bridge itself. The 1995 film adaptation, directed by Clint Eastwood (who also starred alongside Meryl Streep), was filmed on location at the actual bridges of Madison County — and every year since, thousands of visitors have travelled from all over the world to see the six historic bridges for themselves. The town of Winterset (the county seat, and John Wayne's birthplace) hosts the annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival every October — a tradition that has run continuously since 1970.
