π¨βοΈ Paint the "praying hands" village buried in winter snow β Shirakawa-go at dusk with lanterns glowing
The extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage traditional Japanese mountain village with dozens of massive iconic warm chestnut-brown gassho-zukuri "praying hands" farmhouses with distinctive steep triangular thatched straw roofs nestled in a snow-covered mountain valley against a soft pink and pale blue winter dusk sky. Warm chestnut-brown wooden farmhouse walls glowing warm coral in the pink dusk light. Brilliant white fresh snow completely covering every steep triangular thatched roof of every farmhouse. Brilliant white fresh snow completely blanketing the village and the surrounding rice fields and the winding cobblestone village path in the foreground. Warm gold light glowing warmly from every farmhouse window and doorway onto the snow. Warm cream chimney smoke rising softly from every farmhouse chimney catching pink dusk light. Dark bare Japanese cherry and Japanese pine trees dusted with snow framing the village. Warm silhouettes of bundled Japanese villagers in warm crimson and cream winter kimonos and warm cream straw snow boots hurrying along the snowy village path. Warm silhouettes of two Japanese schoolchildren in warm crimson and cream winter coats running through the snow. Warm silhouette of a warm cream and coral traditional Japanese sled. Distant snow-capped Hida Mountains rising in soft coral silhouette on the horizon catching pink dusk light. Shirakawa-go at winter dusk is Japan at its most soulful and most enchanted β 250-year-old thatched farmhouses buried in mountain snow, and one of Japan's most quietly beautiful cultural landscapes. And it is your painting.
Walk into the village at sunset. Watch the windows light one by one. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Shirakawa-go β literally "the White River District" β sits in a remote mountain valley of the northern Japanese Alps in Gifu Prefecture, roughly 250 kilometres northwest of Tokyo and 50 kilometres north of the historic castle town of Takayama. The area's isolation, dramatic mountain terrain, and unique traditional architecture combine to create one of the most extraordinary cultural landscapes in all of Japan. The village of Ogimachi β the largest and most-photographed of Shirakawa-go's three main historic settlements β sits at 500 metres elevation surrounded by the towering Hida Mountain range. The entire region receives some of the heaviest snowfall of any inhabited area on Earth. During winter months, snow accumulations of over 3 metres are typical, and individual snowfall events can exceed 1 metre in a single 24-hour period. This extreme snowfall shaped every aspect of Shirakawa-go's traditional architecture, agriculture, and cultural life. The village's extraordinary traditional farmhouses are built in a distinctive architectural style known as gassho-zukuri β literally "praying hands construction" β a style found essentially nowhere else in Japan and one of the most sophisticated pieces of traditional Japanese vernacular carpentry. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses have steep-pitched triangular thatched straw roofs angled at exactly 60 degrees to the ground, resembling a pair of hands pressed together in Buddhist prayer. The 60-degree roof angle serves a critical structural function: it allows the extraordinary winter snow accumulations of 3+ metres to slide off the roof under gravity, rather than crushing the roof under its own weight. Without this specific roof design, the massive winter snowfall of Shirakawa-go would collapse any conventional Japanese farmhouse within a single winter. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses are built entirely from local materials: Japanese cypress and Japanese cedar wood harvested from the surrounding Hida Mountains for the structural frame; thick natural straw thatch harvested from the local rice fields for the roof covering; hand-tied rope made from local mulberry bark for binding the entire structure together. Not a single nail is used anywhere in the construction. The interior of a gassho-zukuri farmhouse contains three or four storeys entirely within the massive steep triangular roof space. The ground floor housed the family living quarters. The upper storeys were traditionally used for silk production β the Shirakawa-go region was one of Japan's leading centres of silk cultivation from the 17th through 19th centuries, and every gassho-zukuri farmhouse contained several hundred to several thousand silkworms working in the upper storeys during silk production season. The distinctive triangular roof shape maximised interior volume for the silkworm shelves while providing extraordinary thermal insulation against the brutal winter cold. The thatched roofs themselves require extraordinary ongoing maintenance. Every 30-40 years, the entire straw thatch must be completely stripped off and replaced with new locally-harvested straw. Because a single roof replacement requires 200-250 individuals working continuously for approximately 3 days, the village developed a communal cooperative labour system called "yui" β every household provided labour to help replace neighbouring roofs on a rotating cycle, ensuring that all 59 gassho-zukuri farmhouses in Ogimachi could be maintained across generations. The yui cooperative labour tradition continues to this day. Ogimachi and two smaller neighbouring gassho-zukuri villages (Ainokura and Suganuma in neighbouring Toyama Prefecture) were together inscribed as "the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama" UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Approximately 1.5 million visitors per year now visit Shirakawa-go β with peak season during the January-February winter light-up festivals, during which the entire snow-covered village is illuminated with warm gold uplighting at dusk to create one of the most magical winter landscape scenes in all of Japan. Only 59 of the original 300-plus historic gassho-zukuri farmhouses in Ogimachi survive today, but each of these has been meticulously preserved. Standing quietly on the snow-covered village path at 5 PM on a January evening, watching warm gold light glow from the windows of 250-year-old thatched farmhouses buried in fresh Japanese Alps snow while pink dusk light catches the distant Hida Mountains, is one of the most soulful and quietly transcendent landscape experiences on the entire Japanese archipelago.
