β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Himeji Castle stands on Hakuro-jΕ Hill in the city of Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, roughly 55 kilometres west of Osaka and 90 kilometres west of Kyoto. It is universally considered the finest surviving example of Japanese samurai castle architecture in the entire world, and one of only twelve original Japanese castles still standing today (out of over 5,000 castles that once dotted feudal Japan before the 1868 Meiji Restoration ordered most demolished). Himeji Castle was designated Japan's very first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 alongside Buddhist Monuments in the HΕryΕ«-ji Area, and it is one of only two castle sites on the entire UNESCO World Heritage list (the other being the Ryukyu Castles of Okinawa). Himeji Castle's earliest documented fortifications date to 1333, when Akamatsu Norimura built a small hilltop fort here during the Kamakura shogunate period. The castle was significantly expanded in 1346 by Akamatsu Sadanori and again in 1467 during the tumultuous Εnin War period. But the magnificent castle visitors see today is entirely the work of Ikeda Terumasa, a powerful daimyo (feudal lord) who was awarded control of Himeji as a reward for his loyalty to the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu at the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Ikeda Terumasa began the current castle's construction in 1601 and completed the massive main keep (tenshu) and surrounding structures in 1609, using approximately 25 million man-hours of labour, over 2.5 million individually shaped stones for the massive foundation walls, and enormous quantities of Japanese cypress and Japanese cedar for the interior wooden structure. The completed castle contained 83 individual buildings within its defensive walls, including the main six-storey central keep, three smaller keeps at the corners, dozens of yagura (defensive towers), massive stone-walled gates, elaborate moats, and complex maze-like defensive courtyard systems designed to confuse and slow attacking armies. The distinctive brilliant white plaster exterior that gives Himeji Castle its famous nickname was applied specifically for defensive purposes: the white plaster is highly fire-resistant, protecting the wooden interior from arson attacks and incendiary siege weapons β a critical defensive advantage in an era when most Japanese castles were destroyed by fire rather than direct assault. When viewed from a distance during the spring or with cherry blossoms in bloom, the castle's cascading tiered white roofs closely resemble a great white heron (shirasagi) taking flight β earning the castle its beloved nickname "Shirasagi-jΕ" (White Heron Castle) that has been in continuous use since at least the 17th century. Himeji Castle has been miraculously preserved through some of the most turbulent periods of Japanese history. When the 1868 Meiji Restoration ordered the demolition of most Japanese castles, Himeji Castle was scheduled for destruction β but the demolition was ultimately not carried out due to bureaucratic delays and the intervention of local citizens who raised private funds to preserve the castle grounds. During the Second World War, the United States military dropped over 1,000 bombs on the city of Himeji in a July 1945 bombing raid β but by extraordinary luck, no bomb hit the castle keep directly, and the surviving castle grounds became one of only a handful of major Japanese historic sites to survive the war essentially intact. Between 2010 and 2015, Himeji Castle underwent a comprehensive $110 million restoration project during which the entire exterior white plaster was carefully removed, examined, and replaced with new plaster made to the same historical specifications, and every one of the 25 million foundation stones was individually inspected. The castle reopened to visitors on March 27, 2015. Today it welcomes over 2.8 million visitors per year. The surrounding castle grounds are home to over 1,000 cherry blossom trees, making Himeji Castle one of the most famous hanami (cherry blossom viewing) destinations in all of Japan. During the peak bloom period in early April, the castle appears to rise from a sea of soft blush pink cherry blossoms β a spectacle that Japanese newspapers have documented every spring for over 100 years. Standing on the warm cobblestone castle plaza at golden hour on an April afternoon, watching brilliant coral sunset light hit 400-year-old white plaster while cascading cherry blossoms bloom in a spectacular sea of pink around the White Heron, is one of the most beautiful spring landscape experiences on Earth.
