π¨π Paint the green cathedral in peak autumn fire β Arashiyama bamboo grove with maples ablaze
The extraordinary sacred bamboo forest with thousands of massive tall vertical stalks of brilliant emerald green and warm ochre-gold Japanese bamboo rising 10-20 metres tall in bold vertical zone columns against a bright cobalt sky with soft white autumn clouds glimpsed through the top of the grove. Brilliant emerald green bamboo stalks catching brilliant afternoon light. Warm ochre and pale gold bamboo joints catching brilliant afternoon warmth. Dense Japanese maple momiji trees blazing brilliant crimson red, mustard yellow and warm amber autumn colour visible glimpsed between the bamboo stalks and framing the composition. Warm cobblestone winding forest path with warm ochre and crimson fallen maple leaves scattered across the path. Warm silhouettes of a Japanese couple in warm crimson, gold and cream traditional autumn yukata robes strolling the bamboo path taking autumn photos. Warm silhouette of a Japanese schoolgirl in warm cream uniform holding a bright crimson maple leaf. Warm gold shafts of sunlight penetrating between the bamboo stalks and maple leaves in dappled vertical patterns. Dense low green Japanese moss beds along the path edges with scattered warm crimson maple leaves. Arashiyama bamboo in autumn is Japan at its most sacred and most soulful β the green cathedral of Kyoto, and one of the officially recognised "100 Soundscapes of Japan." And it is your painting.
Walk the path at 3 pm. Listen to the wind through the stalks. Let the brush find the emerald. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove β also known as Sagano Bamboo Forest β sits on the western outskirts of Kyoto, Japan, in the historic Arashiyama district roughly 30 minutes by train from central Kyoto Station. It is one of the most beloved and most photographed sacred sites in all of Japan, and one of only a handful of natural landscape locations formally designated by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment as one of "the 100 Soundscapes of Japan" (Nihon no oto fΕ«kei hyakusen) β an official cultural heritage designation established in 1996 to preserve places whose sounds are considered irreplaceable to Japanese cultural identity. The specific sound the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is officially designated to preserve is the distinctive dry rustling sound of wind moving through massive vertical bamboo stalks β a sound that has been celebrated in classical Japanese poetry and Zen Buddhist meditation traditions for over 1,000 years. The bamboo species growing in the grove is Phyllostachys edulis (Japanese name: mΕsΕchiku, or "moso bamboo") β the largest bamboo species native to East Asia. Moso bamboo is remarkable in the natural world. Under ideal growing conditions, a single moso bamboo stalk can grow up to 91 centimetres in a single 24-hour period during peak growing season β one of the fastest documented growth rates of any plant species on Earth. Mature moso bamboo stalks in the Arashiyama grove typically reach heights of 15-20 metres and diameters of 12-18 centimetres, and can live for approximately 15-20 years before naturally dying and being replaced by new stalks emerging from the shared underground rhizome network. Because moso bamboo reproduces primarily through underground rhizomes rather than through seeds, entire bamboo groves are typically genetically identical clone colonies of a single ancestral plant β the Arashiyama grove is estimated to consist of just a handful of individual bamboo organisms sharing an interconnected root system beneath the entire forest. The Arashiyama area has been a beloved cultural and religious retreat destination for Japanese emperors, court aristocrats, and Buddhist monks for over 1,200 years. During the Heian period (794-1185 AD), Arashiyama was a favoured seasonal retreat destination for the Kyoto imperial court and its aristocratic families, who built elaborate country villas and Buddhist temples in the hills surrounding the district. The 8th-century TenryΕ«-ji Temple (built 1339 as the head temple of the Rinzai Zen Buddhist sect and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994) sits directly adjacent to the bamboo grove, and the ancient Nonomiya Shrine β traditionally the site of purification rituals for imperial princesses about to serve at the Ise Grand Shrine β is nestled within the grove itself. The main bamboo grove pathway is 500 metres long and traverses the sacred forest from the Nonomiya Shrine at the eastern end to the ΕkΕchi SansΕ villa gardens at the western end. Bamboo is one of the most culturally significant plants in Japanese civilisation, appearing throughout Japanese poetry, painting, Zen Buddhist meditation, traditional carpentry, and everyday material culture (bamboo remains the primary material for traditional Japanese chopsticks, chasen matcha whisks, and shakuhachi bamboo flutes). The distinctive Japanese aesthetic concept of "yΕ«gen" (εΉ½η) β the sense of profound, mysterious, and quiet beauty in the natural world β is often specifically associated with the visual experience of walking through a mature bamboo grove with dappled sunlight penetrating between the vertical stalks. Arashiyama is also famous for its autumn maple foliage. Throughout the district, dense Japanese maple (momiji) trees blaze in brilliant crimson red, mustard yellow, and warm amber colour every November β creating one of the most spectacular autumn landscape experiences in all of Japan when the crimson maples are viewed against the emerald green bamboo stalks. The Kyoto autumn maple viewing tradition (kΕyΕ) has been culturally central to Japanese aesthetic life for over 1,000 years. Standing quietly on the main bamboo grove pathway at 3 PM on a warm November afternoon, listening to the officially-designated soundscape of wind through 15-metre bamboo stalks while crimson maple leaves catch dappled sunlight and warm cobblestone underfoot bears the footsteps of 1,000 years of imperial pilgrims, is one of the most soulful and quietly transcendent landscape experiences on the entire Asian continent.
