π¨β©οΈ Paint the shrine that floats on the sea β Itsukushima's Great Torii illuminated at night
The extraordinary massive 1875 warm crimson-red and warm cream traditional Japanese wooden Otorii gate rising 16.6 metres tall directly out of the Seto Inland Sea water on massive warm crimson-red wooden posts illuminated in warm amber and gold from dramatic uplighting against a deep indigo starry sky. Brilliant crimson torii gate catching warm amber illumination in exquisite detail. Warm cream Japanese Kanji calligraphy on the top beam catching warm gold light. The wide silver-blue Seto Inland Sea at high tide catching warm gold reflections from the illuminated torii shimmering in the still water. Warm cream and vermillion Itsukushima Shrine visible on the shore behind illuminated in warm amber with warm gold traditional Japanese paper lanterns hung along the shrine pier glowing warm gold. Warm cobblestone shrine boardwalk catching light spill from the shrine. Warm silhouettes of Japanese pilgrims in warm crimson and cream evening yukata robes standing on the shrine pier admiring the illuminated torii. Warm silhouette of a Japanese couple in warm coral evening yukata taking evening photos. Silver moonlight touching the water. Brilliant white stars scattered across the deep indigo sky. Dense dark Miyajima mountain silhouettes rising behind the shrine. Miyajima at night is Japan at its most sacred and most timeless β one of the "Three Views of Japan," and a torii that appears to float on the tide. And it is your painting.
Cross to Miyajima at dusk. Wait for the torii to catch fire. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Miyajima β officially named Itsukushima but universally known as Miyajima ("the Shrine Island") β is a small forested island in the Seto Inland Sea approximately 15 kilometres southwest of the city of Hiroshima, Japan. It is one of the three most beloved sacred sites in the entire Shinto religious tradition and one of the finest examples of a preserved medieval Shinto pilgrimage site anywhere in the world. Miyajima has been considered a sacred island by Japanese religious tradition for over 1,400 years. According to ancient Japanese religious belief, the entire island of Miyajima itself is a physical embodiment of the Shinto goddess Ichikishima-hime β one of the three Munakata sisters, the sea goddesses who are traditionally worshipped as protectors of Japanese sea travellers and the guardians of the Seto Inland Sea trade routes. For centuries, the island's sacred status was so strictly observed that ordinary human residents were forbidden from living permanently on the island. No births and no deaths were permitted to occur on the island itself β pregnant women and dying people were traditionally required to be transported by boat to the mainland shore of Hiroshima before giving birth or passing away, to preserve the sacred island from ritual impurity. Even trees were not permitted to be cut on the island. To this day, no cemetery, hospital, or maternity ward exists on Miyajima. Itsukushima Shrine β the ancient Shinto shrine complex at the northern shore of the island β was originally founded by the powerful noble Saeki Kuramoto in 593 AD. The shrine has been rebuilt many times over the following 1,432 years, but its extraordinary architectural design β a distinctive raised wooden shrine complex built entirely on stilts directly over the tidal seabed of the Seto Inland Sea β has remained essentially unchanged since 1168 AD. The current shrine layout was established under the personal patronage of the powerful samurai warrior Taira no Kiyomori, the head of the Taira clan and one of the most powerful figures of late Heian period Japan. Kiyomori commissioned the current shrine design specifically to allow the shrine to appear to "float" on the Seto Inland Sea at high tide β a visual metaphor for the sacred island's floating position between the human world and the divine realm of the sea gods. The extraordinary Great Torii Gate (Εtorii) β the massive vermillion-red wooden gate that stands 200 metres offshore from the main shrine β is the most iconic image of Miyajima and one of the most-photographed structures in all of Japan. The current Great Torii is not the original β it is the eighth Εtorii to stand at this location. The original 1168 Εtorii and its seven successors were each destroyed by typhoons, tidal storms, or age over the centuries. The current gate was constructed in 1875 and is made entirely of naturally curved Japanese camphor tree wood harvested from ancient sacred camphor trees in the mountains of Kyushu β some of the individual wooden posts were carved from trees over 500 years old. The gate stands 16.6 metres tall (roughly the height of a 5-storey building), the top beam is 24 metres wide, the two supporting posts are 10 metres in circumference at their base, and the entire structure weighs approximately 60 tonnes. Remarkably, the gate is NOT anchored to the seabed with any physical foundations β the entire 60-tonne structure is held in place ENTIRELY by its own massive weight resting on the tidal sand of the seabed. The gate was miraculously undamaged by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 β the shockwave from the blast reportedly passed harmlessly over the sacred island. Between June 2019 and December 2022, the Great Torii underwent an extraordinary three-and-a-half-year restoration project during which the entire gate was encased in scaffolding, meticulously restored, and repainted in its distinctive traditional vermillion colour. The gate was officially reopened to visitors in December 2022. Itsukushima Shrine and the surrounding sacred island were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Miyajima is officially designated as one of Japan's Nihon Sankei β the "Three Views of Japan" β a Japanese aesthetic ranking of the three most beautiful landscape views on the entire Japanese archipelago, first officially designated in 1643 (the other two views are Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture and Amanohashidate Sand Bar in Kyoto Prefecture). Standing quietly on the illuminated warm cobblestone shrine pier at 8 PM on a warm October evening, watching warm gold uplighting catch a 60-tonne vermillion gate that has stood in the Seto Inland Sea for 150 years, is one of the most sacred and unforgettable landscape experiences anywhere on Earth.
