🎨🦌 Paint the world's largest wooden building surrounded by sacred bowing deer β€” Todai-ji in autumn fire The extraordinary 1709 rebuilt Buddhist temple main hall β€” the world's largest wooden building for centuries β€” with distinctive massive warm cream and warm chestnut-brown timber facade and elegant curved tiered upturned traditional Japanese temple roof with warm gold ornamental shibi finials rising against a deep cobalt sky. Warm chestnut-brown timber facade catching brilliant afternoon light in exquisite detail. Warm cream stone facade catching warm coral highlights. Warm gold shibi finials catching brilliant midday sun. Dense Japanese maple momiji trees blazing brilliant crimson red, mustard yellow and warm amber autumn colour framing the temple catching brilliant afternoon light. Warm cobblestone Nandaimon plaza in the foreground scattered with warm ochre and crimson fallen maple leaves. A small herd of warm chestnut-brown and cream sacred Nara sika deer with warm cream spots grazing peacefully among the fallen crimson maple leaves. Warm silhouettes of Japanese visitors in warm crimson, gold and cream traditional autumn yukata robes feeding warm cream shika-senbei rice crackers to the deer. Warm silhouettes of a young Japanese boy in warm cream jacket gently petting a deer with a bright crimson maple leaf tucked in his hair. Warm silhouette of a large male stag with impressive warm ochre antlers. Dense green Japanese pines providing contrast among the blazing autumn colour. Todai-ji in autumn is Japan at its most soulful and most timeless β€” a 1,300-year-old bronze Buddha, and 1,200 sacred deer that bow when you feed them. And it is your painting. Walk the Nandaimon path. Bow to a deer, watch it bow back. Let the brush find the crimson. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β€” both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎨 WHAT YOU GET βœ”οΈ 5 difficulty levels β€” 16, 24, 48, 72 and 96 colors β€” beginner to expert in one download βœ”οΈ 3 outline versions β€” numbered, blank and preview βœ”οΈ SVG + PDF + PNG file formats β€” print at any size without blurring βœ”οΈ Procreate colour swatches β€” drop the palette straight into your iPad βœ”οΈ HEX-coded colour palette on every page βœ”οΈ Instant digital download β€” nothing shipped ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY Todai-ji β€” literally "the Great Eastern Temple" in Japanese β€” stands in the historic city of Nara in Kansai region western Japan, roughly 45 kilometres east of Osaka and 35 kilometres south of Kyoto. It is one of the most historically significant Buddhist temples in the entire world and served as the head temple of all Buddhist temples in Japan during the pivotal Nara period (710-794 AD) β€” the founding era of centralised Japanese Buddhism and Japanese imperial civilisation. Nara itself was the first permanent capital of Japan. Between 710 and 784 AD, Nara served as the imperial capital of the entire Japanese archipelago and was the birthplace of centralised Japanese government, formalised Japanese Buddhism, the earliest documented Japanese poetry anthology (the Man'yōshΕ«), and the earliest surviving Japanese historical chronicles (the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki). During this critically formative century for Japanese civilisation, Emperor Shōmu commissioned Todai-ji as the central temple of a national network of state-sponsored Buddhist temples designed to protect the entire Japanese nation through the Buddhist Dharma. Construction began in 738 AD and the massive temple complex was formally consecrated in 752 AD in one of the most spectacular religious ceremonies of ancient Japanese history β€” attended by over 10,000 Buddhist monks, foreign envoys from Tang Dynasty China, Silla Korea, and Indian Buddhist teachers, and by the entire Japanese imperial court. The centrepiece of Todai-ji is the massive Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden), which houses the extraordinary Great Bronze Buddha (Daibutsu) β€” a colossal 752 AD bronze seated statue of Vairocana Buddha (the cosmic Buddha of the universe) rising 15 metres tall and weighing approximately 500 tonnes. The Great Buddha is one of the largest and oldest bronze Buddhist statues in the world. Its casting in 752 AD required approximately 500 tonnes of bronze, 130 kilograms of gold, and 8 years of continuous manufacturing effort by an estimated 260,000 individual workers organised in specialised metal-casting shifts across multiple foundries. The statue's raised right hand alone (in the traditional Buddhist Abhaya mudra "fear-not gesture") measures 2.5 metres tall, and each of the Buddha's elongated Buddhist earlobes is over 2.5 metres long. The Great Buddha Hall itself was, for many centuries after its completion, the largest wooden building anywhere in the world. The current hall visible today is the third structure on the site β€” the original 752 AD hall was destroyed by fire in 1180 during civil war, and the second replacement (built 1195) was destroyed again by fire in 1567 during another period of civil war. The current hall was rebuilt between 1692 and 1709 under Tokugawa shogunate patronage. Even at only two-thirds the size of the original 752 AD hall (the current version measures 57 metres wide, 50 metres deep, and 48 metres tall), the current Todai-ji main hall remained the largest wooden building in the world for centuries β€” a title it held until at least the year 1998, when it was finally surpassed in absolute physical volume by a modern wooden dome structure in Odate, Japan. Todai-ji was inscribed alongside seven other Nara Buddhist and Shinto religious sites as "the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. But Todai-ji's most beloved feature for millions of visitors every year is not the Great Buddha itself β€” it is the free-roaming sacred sika deer (Cervus nippon) that live throughout Nara Park surrounding the temple. Approximately 1,200 wild sika deer freely roam Nara Park today. In traditional Shinto belief, deer are considered sacred messengers of the Shinto gods β€” a religious status established when the god Takemikazuchi is said to have arrived in Nara riding on the back of a white deer to protect the newly-founded imperial capital in the 8th century. From that mythological event onwards, killing a Nara deer was punishable by death under Japanese law β€” a strict prohibition that remained officially in force until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Nara's deer have thus been continuously protected as sacred animals for over 1,250 years β€” one of the longest continuous animal protection traditions on Earth. The distinctive deer have developed an extraordinary learned behaviour unique in the world: the Nara deer bow their heads politely to human visitors when begging for the small warm cream shika-senbei (deer crackers) sold at licensed stalls throughout the park. Multiple bows in rapid succession typically produce more crackers, and the deer have refined their bowing technique across countless generations of learned behaviour. Nara Park's deer have been formally designated as a Japanese Natural Monument protected under the Japanese Cultural Properties Preservation Law since 1957. Every autumn between mid-October and late November, dense Japanese maple momiji trees throughout Nara Park blaze in brilliant crimson red, mustard yellow, and warm amber β€” creating one of the most beautiful autumn landscape scenes in all of Japan, particularly when experienced alongside the free-roaming sacred sika deer walking peacefully across warm cobblestone paths scattered with fallen crimson maple leaves. Standing on the warm cobblestone Nandaimon plaza on a warm November afternoon, watching a bowing sika deer accept a rice cracker from a Japanese schoolboy's outstretched hand while brilliant crimson maple foliage cascades around a 1,300-year-old 500-tonne bronze Buddha, is one of the most soulful and quietly transcendent cultural experiences anywhere on Earth. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“₯ HOW IT WORKS 1.
