Founded in 628 AD when two fisherman brothers pulled a small warm gold statue of Kannon Bodhisattva (the Buddhist deity of compassion) from their fishing net in the Sumida River, Senso-ji has served as one of Tokyo's most important religious and cultural sites for nearly 1,400 years. The temple's most iconic image is not the main hall itself, but the extraordinary Kaminarimon "Thunder Gate" โ€” the massive warm crimson-red outer gate that guards the entrance to the temple complex. The Kaminarimon is one of the most-photographed structures in all of Japan and the definitive symbol of the historic Asakusa district. The gate was originally established in 941 AD by the samurai warrior Taira no Kinmasa, who commissioned it as an offering of gratitude after his prayers to Senso-ji's sacred Kannon statue were answered. The original 941 gate stood for over 900 years but was destroyed multiple times by fires, typhoons, and earthquakes โ€” most catastrophically in 1865, after which the gate stood in ruins for nearly a century. The current magnificent gate visible today was rebuilt in 1960 through the personal patronage of Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of the Matsushita Electric Industrial Company (now Panasonic Corporation), one of Japan's greatest 20th-century industrialists. Matsushita had personally recovered from a serious illness in the 1950s and attributed his recovery to Kannon Bodhisattva โ€” his personal donation to rebuild the gate was an act of religious gratitude that has become one of the most consequential single acts of religious patronage in modern Japanese history. The gate's most extraordinary feature is the massive warm crimson-red giant paper lantern (chochin) that hangs from the archway. The lantern measures 3.9 metres tall, 3.3 metres in diameter, and weighs approximately 700 kilograms โ€” making it one of the largest traditional paper lanterns in Japan. The lantern is constructed of Japanese washi paper stretched over a bamboo frame, and the massive warm gold Japanese calligraphy on the lantern reads "Kaminarimon" (้›ท้–€, literally "Thunder Gate"). The current lantern is replaced approximately every 10 years due to weather damage, most recently in November 2020, and each new lantern is crafted by the venerable Takahashi Chochin family workshop in Kyoto, one of only a handful of surviving traditional paper lantern makers in Japan. Every ten years, the lantern is folded up during the annual Sanja Matsuri festival to allow the sacred mikoshi portable shrines to pass beneath the gate โ€” one of the most photographed moments in Japanese festival culture. The gate is guarded on both sides by warm crimson-red carved statues of two of the most fearsome and beloved deities of the Japanese Shinto and Buddhist pantheon: Fujin (the god of wind, on the left) and Raijin (the god of thunder, on the right). Fujin is traditionally depicted carrying a massive wind bag over his shoulder from which he releases the winds of the world, while Raijin is depicted with a ring of thunder drums that he beats to create thunder and lightning. The current statues in the gate are the third generation to guard the gate โ€” the original 941 AD statues were destroyed with the first gate, the 1874 restoration statues were destroyed in the 1865 fire that razed the gate, and the current statues were carved in 1978 by master sculptor Bunryuu Nishiyama specifically for the restored gate. Behind the Kaminarimon stretches the historic 250-metre-long Nakamise-dori shopping street โ€” one of the oldest continuously operating shopping streets in all of Japan, first established in the early 1700s during the Edo period to serve pilgrims visiting the temple. Nakamise-dori is lined with 89 warm crimson-red traditional wooden shop stalls selling traditional Japanese sweets (senbei rice crackers, ningyo-yaki doll cookies, wagashi), traditional folk crafts (paper fans, warm gold daruma dolls, wooden geta sandals), and Buddhist souvenirs. Many of the shops on Nakamise-dori have been continuously operated by the same family for over 300 years โ€” a tradition of multi-generational family retail practice that has essentially disappeared elsewhere in modern Tokyo. The Asakusa district itself receives an estimated 30 million visitors per year, making the Kaminarimon Gate one of the most-photographed single structures in the entire world. Standing on the warm cobblestone Nakamise-dori approach at golden hour on a warm October evening, watching brilliant coral sunset light catch a 700-kilogram vermillion lantern that has hung from this gate for 65 years while Japanese families in yukata stroll past guardian deities carved by hand in 1978, is to look directly at the beating heart of old Tokyo. โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐Ÿ“ฅ HOW IT WORKS 1.
