π¨π» Paint the tallest active volcano in Eurasia with a bear fishing at its foot β Klyuchevskaya over Kamchatka's wild salmon river
The massive 4,750-metre-tall snow-capped stratovolcano rising against a deep cobalt sky with soft white clouds. Warm cream snow-capped summit catching brilliant afternoon light. Warm ochre and rust volcanic lower slopes. Dense green Kamchatka taiga at the base of the volcano. A wild silver Kamchatka salmon river in the foreground with brilliant white foam rapids. Four warm chocolate-brown Kamchatka brown bears in the river catching brilliant crimson-orange sockeye salmon leaping from the water. Warm silhouettes of brown bear mothers with cubs on the pebble river bank. Warm ochre river-bank grass and dense fir forest framing the composition. Klyuchevskaya is Russia at its most primal and most wild β the tallest active volcano in Europe and Asia, and the beating heart of the Ring of Fire. And it is your painting.
Fly in by helicopter from Petropavlovsk. Watch the bears fish. Let the brush find the rust. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Klyuchevskaya Sopka is a massive stratovolcano rising to 4,750 metres above sea level on the eastern side of the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia β the largest active volcano in the entire Eurasian landmass, and one of the highest active volcanoes anywhere in the world. The volcano is roughly 500 kilometres northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the peninsula's regional capital and one of the most remote major cities on Earth. Klyuchevskaya is one of the youngest volcanoes in the region β estimated to be only about 6,000 years old β and it is one of the most consistently active volcanoes on the planet, with frequent eruptions of ash, lava, and pyroclastic flows recorded almost every year of the last century. Klyuchevskaya is part of a cluster of 12 major volcanoes known as the Klyuchevskaya Volcanic Group in the Kamchatka Volcanic Belt β a section of the massive Pacific Ring of Fire subduction zone where the Pacific Plate dives beneath the Okhotsk Plate. Kamchatka itself is home to 160 volcanoes, 29 of which are still active, making it one of the most volcanically active regions in the world. The entire cluster of volcanoes was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 as "Volcanoes of Kamchatka" β one of the largest protected volcanic landscapes on Earth. The Kamchatka Peninsula is also home to the highest concentration of Kamchatka brown bears in the world. The Kamchatka brown bear (Ursus arctos beringianus) is one of the largest subspecies of brown bear on Earth β with adult males weighing up to 700 kilograms and standing 3 metres tall on their hind legs β comparable only to the Kodiak bear of Alaska and the polar bear of the Arctic. Approximately 20,000-25,000 Kamchatka brown bears live wild across the peninsula today, with roughly 4-6 bears per 100 square kilometres in prime habitat β the highest density of large brown bears anywhere on Earth. Every summer between July and September, Kamchatka's rivers host one of the most spectacular Pacific salmon migrations in the world. All six species of Pacific salmon β sockeye, king (chinook), coho, chum, pink, and cherry β return to their birth rivers in massive numbers, and it is these salmon runs that feed the bear population. During peak salmon season, it is possible to see dozens of brown bears fishing simultaneously along a single kilometre of river bank. The Kuril Lake in southern Kamchatka is one of the most famous bear-viewing destinations in the world β with over 200 brown bears fishing along its shores during peak salmon runs. Kamchatka's extreme remoteness has kept it one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth. The peninsula is only accessible by air or sea (there is no road connection to the Russian mainland), and it has fewer than 300,000 human residents scattered across an area larger than Japan. Standing on the pebble bank of a wild Kamchatka salmon river on a September afternoon, watching a chocolate-brown mother bear catch a crimson sockeye salmon from the silver rapids while Klyuchevskaya Sopka smokes gently on the horizon 30 kilometres away, is one of the most primal and unforgettable wildlife experiences anywhere on Earth.
