π¨π¦ Paint the ancient chalk cathedrals of the Great Plains β Monument Rocks and pronghorn antelope in Kansas
Towering pale cream and warm ochre chalk formations rising against a deep cobalt Kansas sky. Three graceful pronghorn with warm brown and cream coats and distinctive black horns grazing in the shortgrass prairie. Warm ochre and golden prairie grass stretching to the horizon. Dappled cloud shadows moving across the plain. Monument Rocks with pronghorn on the shortgrass is Kansas at its wildest and most ancient β the postcard shot of the Great Plains, and one of the least-visited natural wonders in the American West. And it is your painting.
Roll down the truck window. Watch the pronghorn lift their heads. Let the brush find the ochre. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Monument Rocks β also called the Chalk Pyramids β stand in a remote corner of Gove County in far western Kansas, roughly 45 kilometres south of the town of Oakley. They are one of the most extraordinary geological formations in the American Great Plains β a series of towering pale-cream chalk spires, pinnacles and natural arches rising up to 21 metres above the flat shortgrass prairie. The formations are made of Niobrara Chalk, a fine-grained sedimentary limestone laid down between 87 and 82 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, when western Kansas was submerged under the Western Interior Seaway β a massive shallow inland sea that split North America in two from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. Every centimetre of the Chalk Pyramids was once seafloor. The chalk itself is compressed from the microscopic shells of tiny marine organisms called coccolithophores that lived, died and settled to the bottom of that ancient sea for millions of years. Since the sea retreated roughly 66 million years ago, wind and rain have slowly eroded the exposed chalk into the dramatic pyramids and arches you see today. In 1968, Monument Rocks became the very first National Natural Landmark ever designated in the United States by the Department of the Interior β beating out both Yellowstone's geysers and California's Redwoods for the distinction. The rocks sit entirely on private ranch land but are open to visitors. Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) β often called "American antelope," though they are not true antelope β are the fastest land mammals in the Americas, capable of running 88 km/h in short bursts and sustaining 55 km/h for over 30 kilometres. They evolved that speed to outrun the North American cheetah β a predator that went extinct roughly 10,000 years ago, meaning pronghorn today are, in essence, running from a ghost. There are still 30,000+ pronghorn in Kansas, most of them living in the shortgrass prairie of the far western counties. Standing at Monument Rocks at midday, watching a herd of pronghorn thread between chalk spires that were seafloor when dinosaurs still walked the continent, is one of the strangest and most humbling landscape experiences in America.
