In 1997, Kazakhstan's first President Nursultan Nazarbayev made one of the most audacious decisions in modern urban history: he moved the entire national capital from the established southern city of Almaty (population 1.6 million at the time) to a small provincial city of just 280,000 in the middle of the empty steppe. His motivation was strategic — Almaty sat in an earthquake zone near the Chinese and Kyrgyz borders, while the new capital would be centrally located, defensible, and would help Kazakhstan populate its vast underused northern steppe region. Between 1998 and today, Astana grew from 280,000 people to over 1.4 million residents, making it one of the fastest-growing capital cities in the world. The Bayterek Tower — the city's iconic centerpiece — was commissioned in 1996 and completed in 2002 at a cost of over $50 million. The 105-metre-tall observation tower was designed by British architect Norman Foster (also the architect of the Reichstag dome in Berlin, London City Hall, and Apple Park in California) working closely with President Nazarbayev on the initial concept. The tower is designed to embody the Kazakh national mythological legend of the Samruk bird — a mystical golden bird that laid a golden egg containing the secret to human happiness in the crown of the sacred Bayterek tree of life every year. The tapered white steel latticework tower represents the Bayterek tree's trunk, and the golden sphere at the top represents the Samruk bird's egg — 22 metres in diameter and finished in real 24-carat gold leaf. Inside the golden sphere is an observation deck at 97 metres offering panoramic views of Astana and the surrounding steppe, plus a small gilded chamber containing a bronze cast of President Nazarbayev's right hand embedded in the floor. Visitors are traditionally invited to place their own hand into the imprint, at which point the national anthem of Kazakhstan plays through the observation deck speakers — an experience that has been described as one of the most memorable and slightly surreal tourist experiences in Central Asia. The tower is the centerpiece of the ambitious Nurzhol Boulevard — a 3-kilometre-long axis of futuristic government buildings including the twin gold Bank of Astana cylindrical towers designed by Norman Foster to resemble giant golden pillars, the massive Khan Shatyr shopping centre designed as a giant white tent representing the traditional Kazakh yurt, and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation pyramid also designed by Norman Foster. Astana was inscribed as a UNESCO Creative City of Design in 2017 and has become known internationally as a showcase of 21st-century futuristic urbanism. The Kazakh steppe surrounding the city bursts every spring with brilliant crimson wild tulips (the ancestor species of every cultivated tulip on Earth), warm yellow buttercup and deep purple wild asters — a wildflower spectacle that has drawn nomads to this land for over 5,000 years.
