π¨β¨ Paint 12 million years of sandstone under a billion stars β Charyn Canyon at midnight
The extraordinary 12-million-year-old sandstone canyon with massive rust-red and warm coral sandstone cliff walls and dramatic hoodoo formations rising in bold silhouette against a deep indigo night sky filled with thousands of brilliant stars and the pale glowing band of the Milky Way arching directly overhead. Warm rust-red sandstone glowing pale gold in the moonlight. Deep purple shadow settling into the canyon recesses creating dramatic contrast. Silver moonlit warm ochre canyon floor catching starlight. Silver Charyn River glinting through the canyon bottom in the middle distance. Warm silhouettes of dramatic sandstone hoodoo spires against the star-filled sky. Warm silhouette of a lone camper's tent at the canyon rim with a warm gold interior glow. Distant Tien Shan mountains in dark silhouette. Charyn Canyon at midnight is Kazakhstan at its most vast and most cosmic β the postcard shot of the Kazakh dark-sky wilderness, and the Grand Canyon of Central Asia. And it is your painting.
Set up camp at the rim. Watch the Milky Way come up. Let the brush find the indigo. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Charyn Canyon lies in southeastern Kazakhstan roughly 200 kilometres east of the former capital city of Almaty, in the vast Charyn National Park established in 2004. The canyon was carved over 12 million years by the Charyn River as it cut its way through the ancient sedimentary rock of the Ili River basin β the same basin that eventually drains into Kazakhstan's Lake Balkhash. The canyon is 154 kilometres long from its beginning in the Tien Shan mountains to its confluence with the Ili River, and reaches depths of 150 to 300 metres. The rock walls are entirely composed of red and warm cream sandstone, mudstone, and conglomerate laid down over 50 million years ago during the Paleogene period. Over time, differential erosion of the softer mudstone layers exposed harder sandstone above, creating the dramatic vertical hoodoos, natural stone castles, and eroded pinnacles that characterise the canyon today. Charyn Canyon is often called "the Kazakh Grand Canyon" or "the Little Grand Canyon" because of its striking geological and visual similarity to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, though it is considerably smaller (roughly one-tenth the depth). The most-photographed section is the 3-kilometre "Valley of Castles" (Dolina Zamkov) β a densely packed corridor of dramatic vertical sandstone spires ranging from 20 to 80 metres tall that resemble fortress towers, cathedrals and giant chess pieces standing upright on the canyon floor. Charyn National Park is home to over 900 documented plant species, 103 bird species, and 25 mammal species including the endangered Ili pika (a small rabbit-like rodent unique to the region), the endangered gazelle (Chinkara), and the Ili River wild boar. The canyon is also home to one of the last surviving groves of the ancient Sogdian ash tree (Fraxinus sogdiana) β a species that has been growing along the Charyn River since the Paleogene period 65 million years ago, making it one of the oldest living tree species in the entire world. Only a few hundred wild Sogdian ash trees survive today, all along the Charyn River. Because of Charyn National Park's extreme remoteness β the nearest large city is Almaty, over 3 hours by car β the region has some of the darkest skies in all of Central Asia. On a clear moonless night, the Milky Way is visible in extraordinary detail, arcing directly overhead from the north-eastern to the south-western horizon. The Bortle Class 2 darkness rating (on a scale where 1 is darkest and 9 is brightest) makes Charyn one of the finest dark-sky destinations in the entire Northern Hemisphere. During peak seasons, adventurous overnight camping visitors set up tents right at the canyon rim, and astro-photographers travel from around the world specifically to photograph the Valley of Castles under the arching band of the Milky Way. The park also connects to the nearby Kolsai Lakes National Park and Lake Kaindy, and the entire region has recently been proposed for UNESCO Global Geopark status. Standing quietly at the canyon rim at 2 AM in late July, with 12-million-year-old rust-red sandstone spires silhouetted below and the pale glowing band of the Milky Way arching directly across the sky above, is one of the most quietly transcendent landscape experiences on the entire Asian continent.
