π¨π Paint the drowned spruce forest beneath a turquoise mirror β Lake Kaindy underwater sunken forest
The extraordinary 1911 earthquake-formed alpine lake with its dozens of warm cream and pale gold submerged spruce tree trunks rising vertically from the depths, split-view composition showing the upper portion of the drowned spectral tree trunks glowing warm coral above the water surface against a bright cobalt sky with the autumn Tian Shan hillsides visible in the background blazing brilliant crimson and mustard, and the lower portion of the drowned spruce trunks descending into the crystal-clear brilliant turquoise-blue water below with the full length of each drowned trunk visible descending downward through the transparent water. Warm silver and pale gold sunlight beams penetrating the turquoise water in dramatic god-rays illuminating the sunken forest. A small school of silver-and-gold Kazakh trout swimming among the drowned trunks. Warm cream pebble lake bottom visible far below. Lake Kaindy is Kazakhstan at its most magical and most rare β a natural cathedral built by an earthquake, still standing 114 years later. And it is your painting.
Look down through the water. Watch the trout circle the trunks. Let the brush find the turquoise. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β both are included.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Lake Kaindy β Kazakh for "the Birch Tree Lake" β sits at 2,000 metres elevation in the Kolsai Lakes National Park in the Tian Shan mountains of southeastern Kazakhstan, roughly 130 kilometres east of Almaty and just 15 kilometres from the Kyrgyz border. The lake is small β only about 400 metres long and up to 30 metres deep β but it is one of the most visually distinctive lakes in the entire world. The lake did not exist until January 3, 1911, when a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Chon-Kemin Valley just across the Kyrgyz border. The Kemin earthquake β one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in Central Asia β triggered enormous landslides across the Tian Shan mountains. One of these landslides sent a massive wall of rock and mud tumbling down a mountainside in what is now Kolsai Lakes National Park, damming a small alpine river valley and instantly flooding an existing mature spruce forest that had been growing there for centuries. Within days, the water level rose over 30 metres and completely submerged the entire spruce forest. And then something extraordinary happened. Because Lake Kaindy sits at high elevation, the water temperature stays extremely cold year-round β averaging just 6Β°C in summer and freezing solid in winter β and because the water is exceptionally clean and low in oxygen at depth, the submerged spruce trees did not rot away. Instead, they were naturally preserved β pickled by the cold, oxygen-poor water β and have been standing underwater for over 114 years since 1911. The tree needles, branches, and any organic material in the water column decomposed and dropped off within the first few decades, leaving only the massive bare cream-and-pale-gold trunks standing vertically underwater exactly where they grew. Because the water in Lake Kaindy is so extraordinarily clear (visibility often exceeds 30 metres), the drowned trunks are visible from the surface all the way down to the lake bed. From above, only the topmost portions of the trunks emerge above the water surface β creating the eerie appearance of a spectral forest of bare spires standing in the middle of a turquoise-blue mountain lake. From below, when scuba divers descend into the lake, the underwater landscape reveals an entire preserved forest of hundreds of standing tree trunks stretching downward into the depths β a phenomenon unique in the natural world. Lake Kaindy is a popular scuba diving destination for cold-water divers who want to see the sunken forest firsthand. Water temperatures at depth remain near freezing year-round even in mid-summer, so divers must use full drysuits. In winter, the lake freezes entirely and the trunks are visible sticking up through the clear ice β a phenomenon that has drawn ice photographers from around the world. The lake is surrounded by the Kolsai Lakes National Park (established in 2007), which covers 161 square kilometres of Tian Shan mountain valleys, alpine meadows, and mixed spruce-birch-poplar forests, and is home to Central Asian brown bears, grey wolves, Tian Shan lynx, marmots, and over 200 bird species. Standing on the pebbled shore of Lake Kaindy on an October afternoon 114 years after a single earthquake changed the landscape forever, watching hundreds of preserved spruce trunks stand silent underneath crystal-clear turquoise water, is one of the most quietly extraordinary landscape experiences in all of Central Asia.
