The park was proclaimed on March 31, 1898 by Paul Kruger, President of the Transvaal Republic, who signed the founding proclamation of the Sabi Game Reserve to protect the region's rapidly disappearing wildlife from hunting. It became Kruger National Park in 1926 and was among the first African game reserves opened to public safari tourism. Today it is home to an estimated 1,000+ leopards, 1,500+ lions, 17,000+ elephants, and one of the largest surviving rhino populations on Earth — the entire Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino), and 147 mammal species in total. Leopards love marulas because the smooth trunk offers strong horizontal branches at the perfect resting height — high enough for safety, low enough for a fast exit. Kruger was declared part of the Kruger to Canyons UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2001 and joined with Mozambique and Zimbabwe in 2002 to form the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park — a 35,000-square-kilometre cross-border conservation area.
