Song-Kul is the second-largest lake in Kyrgyzstan (after Issyk-Kul) at approximately 29 kilometres long and 18 kilometres wide, and it sits within a vast high-altitude alpine plateau surrounded by the massive Tien Shan mountain range. Because the lake sits at such high altitude, it is completely frozen and inaccessible between October and May every year — the surrounding alpine plateau receives heavy snowfall and temperatures regularly drop to -30°C in winter. But every summer between June and September, the frozen plateau melts and transforms into one of the greatest high-altitude alpine pastures (jailoo) in all of Central Asia. For at least 3,000 years, semi-nomadic Kyrgyz herding families have driven their herds of horses, sheep, yaks and goats up to the Song-Kul jailoo every summer to graze the vast warm ochre alpine grasslands, and every autumn back down to the sheltered lowland valleys for the winter. This transhumance tradition remains living practice today: approximately 200-300 Kyrgyz families still spend every summer at Song-Kul in traditional white felt yurts (bozüy in Kyrgyz), preserving semi-nomadic pastoral traditions that have remained essentially unchanged since the Bronze Age. The traditional Kyrgyz yurt is a masterpiece of nomadic engineering. The circular structure consists of an intricately carved wooden lattice frame (kerege) that folds accordion-style for transport, tapered wooden roof poles (uuk) that meet at a central circular crown (tunduk), and outer covering of white felt panels (kiyiz) made from compressed sheep's wool. A well-made traditional yurt can be assembled or disassembled by an experienced Kyrgyz family in under two hours, insulates against both winter cold (down to -40°C) and summer heat, and lasts multiple generations with proper care. The design of the tunduk (the wooden roof crown) is featured today on the national flag of independent Kyrgyzstan (adopted 1992) — a red flag bearing a warm gold tunduk pattern surrounded by 40 flame-like sun rays representing the 40 traditional Kyrgyz tribes. The most extraordinary of all Kyrgyz nomadic traditions, however, is the ancient practice of hunting with trained golden eagles — berkutchilik. This tradition is at least 4,000 years old across the greater Central Asian and Mongolian steppes, and it is preserved as a living practice today among approximately 200-300 traditional Kyrgyz and Kazakh eagle hunters (berkutchi in Kyrgyz, burkitshi in Kazakh). The berkutchi captures a young female golden eagle from her nest at approximately 3-4 months old, trains her over 2-3 years to hunt cooperatively with horses and humans (using traditional voice commands, hand signals, and specialised leather gauntlets, hoods and jesses), hunts with her for 8-10 years across the winter steppes for fox, hare, wolf, and other game, and then — according to strict traditional practice — releases her back into the wild to breed and continue her natural life at approximately 10-12 years of age. The relationship between a berkutchi and his eagle is considered a sacred partnership — many traditional berkutchi speak of their eagles the way traditional shepherds speak of their most beloved sheepdogs, and eagles are given individual names and personalities. A trained female golden eagle can weigh 6-7 kilograms with a wingspan of over 2.2 metres and can dive at prey at speeds exceeding 300 kilometres per hour. The annual Berkutchi Salburun eagle-hunting festival is held every summer at Bokonbayevo village near Song-Kul, where dozens of traditional Kyrgyz berkutchi and their trained eagles compete in traditional hunting demonstrations.
