β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The French Quarter β known to locals as the Vieux CarrΓ© ("Old Square") β is the original heart of New Orleans, founded in 1718 by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is the oldest neighbourhood in Louisiana and one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban districts in the United States, laid out in 1721 by French royal engineer Adrien de Pauger on a distinctive grid of 78 square blocks along the river. Louisiana passed from French to Spanish control in 1762, and then back to France briefly in 1800, before Napoleon sold the entire Louisiana Territory to the United States in 1803 for approximately $15 million β doubling the size of the young country overnight. Two devastating fires β in 1788 and 1794, both under Spanish rule β destroyed most of the original French colonial buildings, which is why almost every building in the "French Quarter" is actually Spanish Colonial in style: stucco-covered brick, iron-lace balconies imported from Sevilla, interior courtyards and heavy shuttered windows. The distinctive iron-lace balconies β one of the most photographed architectural features in America β became fashionable in the 1850s and 60s, when local blacksmiths began producing intricate cast-iron replacements for the older Spanish wrought-iron work. The whole Vieux CarrΓ© was declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1965 and is one of the most-visited urban destinations in the United States. Beignets β the sweet, square, deep-fried pastries dusted heavily in powdered sugar depicted in this scene β arrived in Louisiana with the French Acadians in the mid-1700s. CafΓ© du Monde, the most famous purveyor of beignets in the world, has been serving them alongside its distinctive chicory cafΓ© au lait 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (except Christmas Day) at 800 Decatur Street since 1862. Chicory coffee became a Louisiana staple during the Union blockade of the Civil War, when regular coffee was unavailable and French Louisianans began mixing ground roasted chicory root with what little coffee they had β the tradition stuck. The historic New Orleans streetcar system began operating in 1835 β one of the oldest continuously operating streetcar systems in the world. The famous "St. Charles Line" (the green streetcar in this scene) has been running the same route since 1893, making it the oldest continuously operating streetcar line on Earth. Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) took its name from the "Desire Line" streetcar that once ran through the French Quarter. Sitting on a cast-iron chair at CafΓ© du Monde at sunrise, with warm beignets on the table, chicory in the cup, and the St. Charles streetcar rounding the corner behind you, is one of the most quietly perfect breakfasts anywhere in America.
