The four horses pulling the chariot represent four rivers flowing to the sea. The fountain was originally designed for a different city, but Lyon fell in love with it and kept it. The Lyon City Hall behind it was built between 1646 and 1672 in a grand Baroque style, and its facade was redesigned after a fire in 1674.
