Brilliant white foam crashing against the rocks. Portland Head Light in October is Maine at its most iconic and most beautiful β the oldest lighthouse in the state, and the most-photographed lighthouse in America. And it is your painting.

β¨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Portland Head Light stands on the rocky granite cliffs of Cape Elizabeth in Maine β at the mouth of Portland Harbor, the busiest seaport in New England for much of the 19th century. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1787 under the authority of President George Washington himself, who signed the specific personal directive for the light. It was completed on January 10, 1791 by two Portland masons β Jonathan Bryant and Alexander Greenwood β using hand-cut granite quarried from the surrounding headland, and lit for the first time on the same day. That makes Portland Head Light the very first lighthouse commissioned by the newly independent United States, and one of the oldest lighthouses in the country. The original tower stood 22 metres tall and burned whale oil lamps behind rotating reflectors. Over the following two centuries it was raised, lowered, and modified several times to keep pace with changes in navigation technology β today the tower stands 24 metres tall and its automated LED beacon can be seen from 39 kilometres out at sea. Twenty-eight successive lighthouse keepers lived in the attached red-roofed keeper's cottage between 1791 and 1989, when the light was fully automated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The most famous keeper, Joshua Strout, served for 35 years from 1869 to 1904 β and his lantern was reportedly lit continuously during a devastating 1898 gale that sank the schooner Annie C. Maguire directly onto the rocks at the lighthouse's base on Christmas Eve. Strout personally rescued the entire crew. The 1786 signal that authorised the construction of Portland Head Light was one of the very first acts of the new federal government of the United States, and the light is directly mentioned in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem The Lighthouse. Today it is the most photographed lighthouse in the United States β appearing on more postcards, magazine covers and calendars than any other lighthouse in North America. The keeper's cottage now houses the Museum at Portland Head Light, and the surrounding 90-acre Fort Williams Park is Maine's most-visited state park with over one million visitors a year. Standing at the cliff edge on a crisp October morning, watching Atlantic waves crash into 200-year-old granite while sugar maples burn orange behind the world's most-painted lighthouse, is one of the most quintessentially American experiences you can have on the East Coast.
