πŸŽ¨β›΅ Paint the working heart of the Chesapeake β€” a historic Maryland skipjack passing Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse The historic white wooden skipjack with tall rigged mast and brilliant white gaff-rigged mainsail cutting across the deep blue Chesapeake. The iconic 1875 hexagonal white screwpile lighthouse with red iron roof standing proudly on its distinctive iron legs. Warm cream and dark red lighthouse catching the afternoon light. Brilliant blue Chesapeake water with soft whitecaps. Deep marshy Eastern Shore in the distance. Skipjack and screwpile is Maryland at its most nostalgic and most maritime β€” the postcard shot of the Chesapeake, and one of the last working sail fleets in America. And it is your painting. Feel the bay breeze fill the sail. Watch the dredges bring up oysters. Let the brush find the coral. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas β€” both are included. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎨 WHAT YOU GET βœ”οΈ 5 difficulty levels β€” 16, 24, 48, 72 and 96 colors β€” beginner to expert in one download βœ”οΈ 3 outline versions β€” numbered, blank and preview βœ”οΈ SVG + PDF + PNG file formats β€” print at any size without blurring βœ”οΈ Procreate colour swatches β€” drop the palette straight into your iPad βœ”οΈ HEX-coded colour palette on every page βœ”οΈ Instant digital download β€” nothing shipped ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY The skipjack is the official state boat of Maryland β€” a shallow-draft, single-masted, gaff-rigged sailing workboat developed on the Chesapeake Bay in the late 1800s specifically for one job: oyster dredging under sail. The design was born of a Maryland state law passed in 1865 (still on the books today) that forbids the use of motorised vessels for dredging oysters on most of the Chesapeake β€” a conservation measure intended to protect the bay's massive but fragile oyster beds. The result was a golden age of skipjack building from roughly 1900 to 1910, when hundreds of these graceful V-bottomed workboats were built by shipwrights along the Eastern Shore in towns like Cambridge, Deal Island and Tilghman Island. At the industry's peak in 1910, over 1,000 skipjacks were dredging oysters on the Chesapeake β€” the largest working sail fleet in North America. Today, roughly a dozen active skipjacks remain in the working fleet β€” the very last commercial sailing fleet in the entire United States. Every skipjack must still work under sail alone from Monday through Friday during oyster season; Maryland law now allows two-day-a-week motor use only via an attached push-boat. Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse β€” the elegant hexagonal white lighthouse with red iron roof in this scene β€” was built in 1875 to mark a treacherous shoal at the mouth of the South River near Annapolis. It is the last screwpile lighthouse still standing in its original location on the Chesapeake Bay and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1999 β€” one of only 12 lighthouses in the United States to receive that designation. Screwpile lighthouses are an ingenious 19th-century American engineering innovation: rather than build a stone tower, the entire hexagonal wooden lighthouse rests on eight massive cast-iron piles that were literally screwed into the soft bay bottom using a hand-cranked capstan. This allowed lighthouses to be built directly over dangerous shoals in soft mud and sand where a traditional foundation would have been impossible. Once ice-choked Chesapeake winters destroyed most of the other screwpile lights by the mid-20th century; Thomas Point survived because the local community fought for it. Standing on the bow of a working skipjack at sunset, watching the mainsail catch the wind while Thomas Point Light guides you home, is to sail directly into 150 years of Maryland maritime history. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“₯ HOW IT WORKS 1.
