By the late 1990s, it was considered one of the most dangerous urban zones on Earth, controlled by armed groups and cut off from the rest of the city by geography and fear. Everything changed in 2011, when the city built a set of six outdoor public escalators — the first of their kind in the world — climbing 384 metres up the hillside, connecting the neighbourhood to the metro in six minutes instead of a 35-minute climb. Young artists from the barrio, led by the Casa Kolacho collective, began covering the walls with vast murals telling the story of what the community had survived and what it was becoming. Today Comuna 13 is one of the most visited neighbourhoods in Colombia — a UNESCO-recognised model of social urbanism, where hip-hop, breakdance and street art turned a warzone into an open-air museum.
